It’s been a historic State Visit by President Steinmeier & Elke Büdenbender. My sincere thanks to Their Majesties The King & Queen, and to all who helped make this visit so memorable. It marked the culmination of a year in which we’ve taken the 🇬🇧🇩🇪 friendship to the next level.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Oxford.

Together with his wife Elke Büdenbender, he also met with students of the Oxford German Society, and was shown examples of academic research.

President Steinmeier was greeted there by HRH The Duke of Kent and laid a wreath in an act of solidarity and remembrance.

President Steinmeier and his wife were accompanied by HRH The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

This afternoon, Tristram Hunt and Tim Reeve welcomed President Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender to the V&A East Storehouse, where they were given a tour of the museum’s many highlights, including the David Bowie Centre and the Frankfurt Kitchen.

As part of the State Visit, Elke Büdenbender, who worked as a judge, visited the Royal Courts of Justice, where she met with Sue Carr, The Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales.

Together with other female judges and law officials they discussed the topic of women in law.

Elke Büdenbender, President Steinmeier’s wife, visited Judith Kerr Primary School in South London, where she listened to the school choir and enjoyed tea with pupils.

The school has a strong focus on language teaching and was the first English-German bilingual state primary school in the UK.

During the last German State Visit to the UK, Queen Elizabeth II presented the Dresden Cross to German President Roman Herzog.

The Cross and Orb, which was commissioned by the Dresden Trust, a UK charity, now sits on top of the rebuilt Frauenkirche as a symbol of reconciliation.
