Hurricane Melissa has made landfall in Jamaica as a powerful Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph sustained winds. It will tie the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Atlantic recorded history based on central pressure. Follow the latest forecast here: www.hurricanes.gov

Hot water is hurricane fuel and the Caribbean is HOT. According to Climate Central, the warmer-than-usual ocean surface temperature below Melissa is 700x more likely due to human-caused #ClimateChange. When there’s more fuel, any hurricane can strengthen further and for a longer period of time.

#Melissa is slowly continuing its journey across the Caribbean Sea and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by tomorrow and reach major hurricane strength by Sunday, posing a significant threat to Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. For the latest, check out www.hurricanes.gov.

Nearly half of the nation’s affordable housing stock experienced three or more weeks’ worth of extreme heat alerts in 2024, the hottest year on record, as the affordable housing and climate crises increasingly collide.
October 23, 2025 at 2:55 PM
📢NEW: @ucs.org finds that most of the nation’s affordable homes were in counties exposed to 1 or more weeks’ worth of heat alerts in 2024. Major metropolitan areas account for about 1/3 of the affordable housing exposed and thousands of counties in less densely populated areas account for ~2/3.

The fingerprint of climate change is everywhere here. According to Climate Central’s Climate Shift Index, human-caused climate change made the warm-than-usual waters under Melissa 600 times more likely. csi.climatecentral.org/ocean

Given how slow the storm is moving, there is the potential for significant flash flooding in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Some forecasting models predict over 12 inches of rain for these countries. Here’s the latest rainfall forecast from the National Hurricane Center through Sunday:

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center has Tropical Storm Melissa slowly strengthening throughout the week as it moves very slowly to the northwest. For more information on the forecast for Melissa, head to www.hurricanes.gov.

Today's rally @ the MA State House in support of the climate superfund bill (H.1014/S.588) featured powerful art showing what's at stake in the movement for #ClimateJustice. We called on our legislators to #MakePollutersPay for their share of adaptation costs in the climate crisis they helped cause.

These unseasonably warm temperatures have big implications for people, livelihoods and ecosystems, and will get worse as the planet continues to warm.

Locations like Minneapolis, MN are forecasted to approach 90F Friday and Saturday. If they reach 90F on Saturday, it would be the latest point in the calendar year that this has occurred in the city’s recorded history.

Climate change won’t stop for a government shutdown. We’re following a developing late-season heatwave in the Midwest and Northeastern US. Temperatures are expected to be over 20F above normal today through early next week.

While the 2025 hurricane season seems quiet - no landfalls in the U.S. - we’ve already observed 3 major hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. For the first time since 1935, the Atlantic’s first 3 hurricanes were major (Erin, Gabrielle, Humberto). Humberto is still a Cat 4 hurricane near Bermuda.

Folks living along the southeast coast are dealing with flooding and surf impacts from Tropical Storm Imelda. Luckily, Imelda is not expected to make landfall in the U.S. and instead will drift out to sea. Be sure to follow the National Hurricane Center for the latest information: www.hurricanes.gov

According to the Climate Shift Index from Climate Central, some of these warm ocean temperatures were made over 100x more likely due to climate change (csi.climatecentral.org/ocean)

And with that, ocean surface temperatures remain above average in the Atlantic. If a storm does develop, it will have plenty of extra energy to work with and potentially form into a major hurricane:
September 15, 2025 at 7:22 PM
But things look to be changing. The environment in the Atlantic is becoming more favorable for thunderstorm and hurricane development. This storm system has an 80% chance of forming into a tropical depression in the coming days.
September 15, 2025 at 7:22 PM
Additionally, the African Sahel has seen less precipitation and storms than usual. This affects hurricane development because thunderstorms over the African Sahel usually serve as “seeds” for hurricane development as they enter the Atlantic. Fewer African Sahel storms = fewer hurricanes.
September 15, 2025 at 7:22 PM
In order for a hurricane to form, the atmosphere needs to be moist and unstable. This allows thunderstorms to develop, which are the precursor to hurricanes. However, the atmosphere has been dry and unusually more stable than average, as pictured here (blue line showing 2025 atmospheric instability
September 15, 2025 at 7:22 PM
For the first time since 1992, there have been no named storms in the Atlantic Ocean for the month of September through the 15th. Early September is usually the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season:
