The Navy made the name change a requirement as part of the consolidation of the military under a single department, because they didn't want it to look like they were being brought under the command of the Army. Nothing remotely to do with political correctness, which wasn't even a thing.

That does seem to be the de facto rule considering that I haven't seen a single person asking why Trump has apparently been allowed to use tariff revenue as his own personal slush fund.
