This photo gets me every time.

Every geologist has pictures like this: dirty and disheveled, but just glad to be out in an interesting place. I love field photos of friends, colleagues, and myself. You can see the geological joy we share.

The joy is in this photo. Then 13 hours later, it was over.
On May 18, 1980, David A. Johnston, a dedicated USGS volcanologist who earned his Ph.D at the @UW and the PNSN, was on duty monitoring Mt. St. Helens. That morning, he issued the now-famous warning, “Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!”, during the first moments of the eruption.

🧪 🔭 The James Webb Space Telescope released 19 high-res images of nearby face-on spiral galaxies in near- and mid-infrared light, revealing spiral arms brimming with stars—and red orbs where still-forming stars are encased in gas and dust. Examine them all: webbtelescope.pub/3SxNSaU

A week ago we visited a pulsar in a Star Wars RPG adventure adapted by our GM @jointheschwarz.bsky.social, so of course I had to draw it.

As the ring turns: our first results are out from the 2018 Event Horizon Telescope 🔭🧪 campaign, and the ring around the M87* black hole has shifted 30°! Congrats to the team! We're not entirely sure what it means but we have a few ideas, stay tuned for the Theory & Interpretation paper coming soon!

The image on the cover of the Joy Division album "Unknown Pleasures" is from a plot that radio astronomer Harold Craft made for his PhD dissertation, using data collected at Arecibo while studying the pulsar Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered OTD in 1967.🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬
