It was! I found the end a tad disjointed but really liked the way it looked at choice, responsibility, and grief

yeah, I guess I wish Elrond had a line about seeing this before, or having lost people? so people who know his backstory could be like, ah, I see. idk! just thought it would have added a nuance to that whole interaction that would be interesting

I agree there, although I was upset about the idea at the time. I do think there's a larger point about what role female characters have to fill to be considered interesting/valuable

for all of JRRT's flaws (buddy hated feminism) I've always felt that his female characters have their own integrity and journey outside of their relationships with men. and the movies, oddly, manage to diminish this, imo.

we know that he himself believed creation/sub-creation was an expression of faith. so Arwen weaving a banner is her expression of belief and love: that Aragorn will win, that Sauron will be defeated, that Middle-earth will see peace and joy again.

sitting at home & weaving a banner doesn't seem like anything. it is women's work and doesn't make for a good movie. but in Tolkien's worldview, creation is incredibly important. it's a mark of goodness, a reflection of Iluvatar.

but generally, I'm not sure the movies knew what to do with Arwen, because she doesn't fit into either the powerful (Galadriel) or feisty (Eowyn) molds. (This is way oversimplifying my personal reading of both Galadriel & Eowyn, btw!)
