Battle of Colenso. Victoria Cross: Captain Congreve was shot through the leg, through the toe of his boot, grazed on the elbow and the shoulder, and his horse shot in three places. F. Roberts [Portrait], assisted Captain Congreve. He was wounded in three places.

16 Dec 1558. Elizabeth Jenks, Baroness Rich, died aged forty-eight. Buried at Felsted, Essex. Wife of Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, Lord Chancellor. They ancestors of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Consort Camilla and Diana Spencer Princess Wales.

09 Jun 1597 John Wrey of North Russell buried at St Peter's Church, Tawstock with his wife Blanch Killigrew who had died two years before. Fine late 16th Century four tier monument which was moved from St Ive Church, Cornwall in 1924.

On 16 Dec 1485 Catherine of Aragon was born to King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile at the Palace of Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. She would marry Prince Arthur and his brother King Henry VIII. She died in 1536.

On 14 Dec 1290 the body of Queen Eleanor of Castile rested where Cheapside Cross was subsequently built at a cost of £300; one of the most elaborate of the twelve Eleanor Crosses.
The Cross, now demolished, may be seen the 1547 image of the Coronation procession of King Edward VI.

On 14 Dec 1911 the South Pole was reached for the first time by an expedition led by Norwegian Roald Amundsen. The expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott reached the pole thirty-four days later.

11th Dec 1785 sculptor Joseph Gott was baptised at Calverley, West Yorkshire. Monument by Gott to Edward Cheney at St Luke's Church, Gaddesby, Leicestershire representing him fighting at Waterloo. His horse shot, collapsing; one of four he rode into battle.

11 Dec 1661. Roger Palmer was created 1st Earl Castlemaine by King Charles II in recognition of his wife's [Barbara Villiers] services to Charles in the bedroom. The title to only descend to his heirs by Barbara i.e. her and Charles' children.

11 Dec 1290. The body of Queen Eleanor of Castile rested at Dunstable Priory on its journey to Westminster. Annals of Dunstable: " ... a cross of remarkable size was erected, with our prior present and sprinkling holy water."
The cross now destroyed.
