Happy Tuesday, everyone. It doesn't take much to be the light for another. I've been the recipient of many lights.

In the 1940s, there were less than 25 whooping crane left.

Due to conservation efforts, there ~800 today. It is always special to see them in the wild.

Enormous news for US literature. A new, Mellon-led, $50 million fund for nonprofit literary orgs and publishers. Closest thing we've ever had to it was Mellon and Wallace in 1991, which, in today's dollars, was still less than half this. Open call begins Nov 10. literaryartsfund.org/about/

ROOTS OF MY FEARS contributor's copy has arrived!

This snazzy anthology gathers stories of familial horror in grim legacies, and includes my story "Crepuscular," of desperate mothers, dangerous psychic powers, and something that watches from the sea.

I'm heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of my favorite living writers. Not only did he introduce me to the love of the Irish language, but also Anthony Murphy's Mythological Ireland, my new favorite bookstore Castle Books, and so much more. I have adored his book Listen To the Land Speak.
