Education Commissioner Mike Morath equated experience-based teacher pay with socialism to the State Board of Education.

TSTA disagrees. Seniority-based pay rewards educators for their years of service providing quality teaching to our students. We will keep fighting for more pay for all teachers.

The Trump administration announced last week it would continue dismantling the Department of Education, even though it can be abolished only by Congress.

Without this funding, fewer Texas students will get enough to eat, attend college and receive an equal and high-quality education.

The Trump Administration has just decided that highly trained, licensed and essential workers, don't qualify as "professional" enough to receive federal loans.

Removing that status means that students are deterred from entering in-demand fields, enrollment falls and workforce shortages worsen.

The Trump Administration chose American Education Week to announce their illegal plan to further abandon students by dismantling the Department of Education.

The Department of Education is essential to our students' success.

In a win for religious freedom and church-state separation, a federal judge required over a dozen Texas public school districts to remove Ten Commandments displays by Dec. 1 and prohibiting them from posting new displays.

Public schools are for education, not evangelism.

The Trump administration announced Tuesday its plan to shift the Department of Education functions to other federal agencies—an unprecedented, unilateral attempt to dismantle a department created by Congress to guarantee equal access to educational opportunity to this nation’s children.

Shame on this administration.

Their latest attempt to dismantle the Dept of Education—during American Education Week—is illegal and immoral. Not only do they want to starve and steal from our students—they want to rob them of their futures.

Anyone who claims to care about children should be livid.

In his reelection announcement last week, Gov. Abbott proposed eliminating school property taxes without suggesting how to replace the billions of dollars in lost revenue, much of which is used to fund public education. Instead, Abbott celebrated his new $1 billion voucher program.

A three-judge panel just ruled that Texas cannot use its new congressional map for the 2026 election and must stick to the map drawn in 2021.

The decision is a major blow for Republicans and Trump who pushed the unusual mid-decade redistricting to protect the narrow GOP majority in the U.S. House.

Sending federal education dollars to the states with little to no oversight makes it much less likely that the funding will reach the students it was intended for. Instead, they are often funneled into school voucher schemes.

It is critical that educators apply for these review groups, which also will include parents, industry representatives and, alas, ideologues who want to destroy public education.
