Both the P-38 and the SR-71 were designed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson of Lockheed. A brilliant designer!

It was a revolutionary system, but I think the price really kept it a niche system. I came across a good working one for a reasonable price, I'd entertain getting one to try it out.
