I've been away from Python for a bit, and project setup seems to have advanced a lot from one obviously correct way to do things. Where there was setuptools + pip + pip-tools + venv, there is now `uv`, `pixi`, `poetry`, `pdm`, more?

Maybe because it's not obvious because I'm not dutch?

Any […]

Recently I've been thinking Web Rings are underrated.

I decided to be properly cyberpunk, my bar for Neotropolis needs exhaust fans on the outside. To be cinematic, the fan should turn pointlessly slow.

I bought a fan with a speed controller. It seem to use 5V PWM. Sending my own PWM, ~8% is the lowest speed. Below […]

I wore my Owl head and cyberpunk jacket for the Halloween party at #supercon and a bit Saturday night too. Though I had to keep taking it off to speak to people. At some point I need to add a speaker like those used for some storm trooper helmets.

There were a number of cool badge cases at Supercon this year. @thzinc kinda vaporwave case was really cool in person.

Also here's @geekmomprojects 's Souis Cuitton purse and ageppert's Speak&Spell

Today at #supercon - while the multimeter and bendy and scope SAOs were the most impressive last year, this hedgehog that @mitten made was my favorite. And now I have one!

(I've been thinking a bit about SAOs / badges. Something like a pocket operator would be a […]

Best outfit at #supercon last night IMO - @securelyfitz - above the buttons are paper displays that change questions, and when you make a choice, it takes your picture and prints out the meme with you in it and the questions you were given.

Latest creation: KPop Demon Hunters light sticks. @xconstants.bsky.social suggested them so she could greet Huntrix / Saja Boys trick-or-treaters as their fan.

I got an advertisement in the mail that offered a full print catalog on request. Which reminded me I miss catalogs.

DigiKey was particularly inspiring - flipping through pages of ICs and switches and cases and their diagrams and imagining projects.

Unfortunately I don't think I have any […]

the biggest problem we *already have* in open source right now, which we have oversimplified into the term "supply chain security", is the lack of understanding that putting a dependency in your project's dependency set (package.json, pyproject.toml, requirements.txt, cargo.toml, etc) is not […]

At #burningman this year, I brought a small 1200 lumen projector that I could mount on my bike. Would it be feasible to do some quick on the fly projection mapping? It seems that yes, for somewhat small (about 6m x 3m max for reasonable brightness) and not very […]

Got self-written drivers for the GP1294AI VFD display working.

There's an existing U8gr driver. I now have it working with Adafruit_GFX (with a GFXCanvas1 buffer) and with #rust embedded_graphics via CCanvas.

Unfortunately neither framework seems to support […]

As we prepare for colorful explosions, I remembered I wanted to share colorful lasers + confetti I saw a few months ago at Gareth Emery's LSR/City show.

I have a singular RGB laser with ILDA interface + USB DAC that I've played with a little over a year ago. Someday I'd like to drive it with code.

For some reason YouTube decided I'd be interested in this video I already watched many many years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo_7s4TrL28

I saw it in person in at The Troubadour in LA in 2013. I wasn't aware of it - just there for Little Boots, and was very impressed. It was well […]

It has become relatively easy & affordable to put together an LED Matrix sign. Recently I put together a 6 panel display using 1/8 scan modules for something much brighter than the 1/16 & 1/32 scan modules I usually use. It's bright enough to carry around in high […]

This document from 249 years ago seems remarkably relevant today https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript

If someone wants some slogans perhaps for signage, there's some good stuff in there to quote.

Maybe quote it along with some stars & stripes for celebrating Flag Day […]

There's some discourse on generative AI "democratizing" art.

And this is so confusing to me. I create images. And when I do, I'm trying to take something in my head, and make it real. And share that image in my head with others.

It's my image in my head. If I describe that to AI to make the […]

Result of many months of work - over 15,000 LEDs to make a dim room.

The triangles on the front are segments of 32 addressable LEDs, but were just solid white most of the time. The window clock is commercial sheets of WS2816 driven by Novastar drivers/processor […]

Unfortunately, while I did have a sign, before heading out, I realized it was unreadable without shade. The location was a large plaza at noon. So in the end, I had nothing more than my presence.

I expect there will […]
