Voorstraat in Utrecht: a true fietsstraat where bikes come first and cars are guests. It’s not just safer and more relaxed to cycle - the whole street benefits. Outdoor cafés, quieter homes, and a vibrant public space. When you design for people, cities flourish.

So Birmingham, Alabama murder rate is 76 per 100k, Chicago is 19. In response the president threatens to send troops to Chicago and relocates Space Command to Alabama.

This week, I spoke at a forum about how to address poverty. I talked about my report showing 80% of benefits applications in Monroe County are denied. One way to address poverty is getting people help for which they are qualified.

Around 40% of all employees (45M) in Germany are already offered the option of leasing an (e)bike by their employers, and the number is increasing.

Such leasing offers tax benefits for the employee and has been proven to reduce sick days as benefits for both, the employer and the employee.

Monroe County is an outlier in how it administers public assistance.
🔹 81.5% of applicants were denied in 2024
🔹 75% of case closures were for “compliance” issues
🔹 Thousands wait months for help
Read my report on the county's benefits system: rachbarnhart.com/wp-content/u...

I did a report on years worth of stats on Monroe County's benefits system. One thing was wild was how many applications the county processes -- way more than any other county outside NYC.

Monroe also has one of the highest denial rates.

To start the year, let’s debunk a common myth: the Dutch do not have cycling infrastructure everywhere. That’s because it isn’t always needed. New post and video!
When is there no need for protected cycling infrastructure?
Happy New Year to all! This first post of 2025 marks the beginning of a fresh year of cycling-related content. For January, I’ll publish on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, returning to my usual schedule of the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from February. To start the year, let’s debunk a common myth: the Dutch do not have cycling infrastructure everywhere. That’s because it isn’t always needed.

A 2016 study of over 100 cities showed that footfall increased on pedestrian-only streets resulting in retail sales also rising by around 49 per cent. www.euronews.com/next/2023/09....
What are the economic benefits of car-free cities?
European cities are increasingly becoming more pedestrianised and bike-friendly. Does this have an economic cost or is it a win-win situation?

Raised crosswalks demand motorist attention and naturally enforce speed calming, making modal conflict points safer for everyone. Proper design prioritizes safety. No sign alone can achieve that.
