It was great to share my PhD research with others and celebrate after my public defense last week. In Fribourg it's tradition for colleagues to build a graduation hat - I'm pretty happy with what they came up with!

The most important point is that the Living Planet Report, from which the statistic is derived, only counts native species. Another important point is that it only claims that the average population studied is decreasing by 73% - in fact, almost as many populations are increasing as decreasing.

But more generally, this shows how out of control growth in AI is. I think that's reason for concern - anything that accelerates is hard to control.

In many countries, the ability for all individuals to be able to own a house is a goal across the political spectrum.

But why? Countries considered successful in many ways (GDP being just one of them) don't always have high rates of home ownership. Note Switzerland marked with the red X.

In other news, I had a very pleasant stop in Hong Kong today. Only scratched the surface of the city, but I had a great first impression: not least because of the abundance of free, clean public restrooms! A highly undervalued aspect of most cities!

So you've gotten an orange cat by mistake, and regretting your choices? Regret no longer! Now you can transform your cat into a leaner, more monochrome feline. This is a patented Tristan device, offers and investments welcome 😌

Only got a week until my thesis submission deadline. I should be stressed. Fortunately, I've found some pretty effective stress-relief 😄

No apparent relationship between healthcare expenditure and life expectancy found. Clearly, healthcare is a scam and should be abolished!

Hi, Oscar Horta (Santiago de Compostela) recently advertised a position on wild animal ethics. The deadline was October 26, but given how short notice it was... There might be a chance it's still possible. I would email him if you're interested.
