Realizing that the composer of one of my favorite scores from last year DID get Oscar nominated, just not for the film I wish it was for

Drive-Away Dolls getting nothing at the Dorian Awards is a crime against lesbians everywhere 😔

Wdym the Robbie Williams CGI monkey musical biopic is bombing...

(seriously though it's actually so good and you should watch it)

After a not insignificant amount of time I am FINALLY (mostly) done editing the new video. Should be up on Monday!

This is probably the closest thing I've done to making a "new film" since I graduated from film school, and I'm proud of what it's amounted to. Very niche, but I think pretty neat!

Sure the Globes just happened, but I'm still riding off the high of seeing Better Man this afternoon.

Soooo much better than I ever expected (and I didn't even really know who the guy was until a few months ago). Watch it like a new blockbuster musical! Have fun!

Finally got around to Kneecap last night and it must be said: this film is like the antithesis of every problem I had with The Brutalist.

BIG, LOUD, BOLD, IMPORTANT messaging. A film that isn't afraid to speak its mind plainly enough that there's no room for debate.

Free Palestine!

Started the year with Juror #2, which I kind of had a blast with.

I'll never say no to a good juicy drama and this delivered! More like this, please!

Update, Re: just saw The Brutalist...

I'm left someone startled by how unwieldily it handles its messaging around Israel and how absolutely no one is talking about it. A film with impeccable crafts that go towards messaging I find myself deeply conflicted by. That ending doesn't help :/

Spending New Years Eve sitting in a theater for 4 hours watching The Brutalist on 70mm.

Can't wait!

Have played more games this year than I have in quite awhile and I think my games of the year have to be UFO 50 and Caves of Qud.

Both are so fundamentally innovative while maintaining a beautiful simplicity to their design. I suspect both will go down as sleeper legends!

Pulled a somewhat insane triple-feature today with IBELIN, THE PIANO LESSON and HOT FROSTY.

The joys of end-of-year movie catch-up

Honorable mention because I was really tossed between him or Chaplin...

WOW, I just watched CHICKEN FOR LINDA! and it's a genuine crime this isn't being talked about as one of the year's best films.

Beautifully expressive animation, some of the best music of the year, and a story that knows how to bring so much heart out of such a simple premise. Watch it! 📽

Having a great time doing some end-of-year movie catch-up with my roommate the past few days:

Strange Darling was a good time, Dahomey was effectively inventive, and Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person was maybe the most Quebecois film I've ever seen (positive)

Getting quite excited about my next video! Feels like I'm returning to filmmaking while still working within the video essay format. It's nice to feel genuinely inspired by something I'm making again :)

Pretty blown-away by Flow. Wasn't quite anticipating how poetic it'd be, but the final act swept me away and left me in a deep state of melancholy. Still thinking about it.

(light spoilers) Has it been long enough for us to talk about how Venom: The Last Dance ends with a literal Venom-Eddie fancam

May seem small, but I've been needing a win and yesterday I got one!

This is the first somewhat sizable success I've had with the channel, and the hope is that things can snowball from here. Either way, those big ambitions are feeling a little more possible today :)

Feels like this year was somewhat slow in giving me those one-to-remember film experiences (TV Glow & Sing Sing aside), but recently have been pretty struck by Nickel Boys and A Real Pain.

Saw the latter today and there's just something in its methodology that really worked for me. #filmsky

And here goes... my first complete #pixelart piece! Honestly didn't know I had this in me! Jumped into this a bit blind after doing some basic #Aseprite practice and couldn't have dreamed I'd end up so proud of it :)

(It's also the new banner for my YouTube channel where I talk about movies!)

Decided to try pixel art a couple weeks ago, which feels like perfect timing with all the artistic inspiration Bluesky has been giving me. These extremely-pixelized movie stills are background works in a larger piece (1 of 2) I'm working on, but I've been itching to share!

Vive L'Amour (Tsai, 1994)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the master of slow cinema crafted the greatest film about queer loneliness I've ever seen. A delicate film about quiet longing, the desire to belong, to be loved, to understand oneself. Never ceases to bring me to my own sort of quiet contemplation.
