okay, time for a prompt post to distract us all from the horrors. quote this post with your areas of expertise, interest, hyperfixation and/or obsession and invite your audience to ask you questions about them.

You're not seeing the defense and international conflict experts disagreeing because if the facts are true, it's one of the most basic things in the law of armed conflict: You cannot kill people who are "hors de combat," taken out of the game by injury or attack. This is Geneva 101 stuff.
I follower a few defense experts.

Seeing them all straight-up declare this a war crime without any him-and-hawing is uhm

Disconcerting.

Pete Hegseth must resign, as does Stephen Miller. Donald Trump should be subpoenaed before Congress to answer for HIS policy.

That order is unambiguously evil: if justice is not done in this world for it ( and it should), then surely it will be done in the next.

The people Jesus said who would face punishment are those who were cruel to the poor and least.

(imo, the punishment is limited in time, and is cleansing)
Also recognize that this unambiguous use of the military to commit murder of helpless noncombatants as they fought for life is a direct reflection of the virulent white supremacy that has seized our government, where every Latino man is a gangbanger in a de facto state of war against White America

The people in my small town are shocked- simply shocked- that because they voted down a tax increase, we will have to balance the budget by cutting our library contract.

There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and so little understanding of actions having consequences.

This is pretty close to spot on, always enjoy hearing the khagan of the Great plains get it right
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

This is going to make post saddam Iraq look like the marshall plan
Really looks like the United States is about to launch a regime change war against Venezuela with:

-No casus belli
-No authorization from Congress
-No allies or international support
-No plan for a post-Maduro Venezuela
-No preparation for any sort of stabilization or containment of the fallout

imagine looking at 2003, and saying yes, I want that, but better, and there will be no consequences like in 2003 because I'm built different.

There's hubris and then there's whatever this is.

My most woke opinion is that all forms of kyriarchy/pyramid shaped power structures are damaging in some way.

We should be constantly looking for ways to widen circles of solidarity and flatten or dismantle structures of power.
My wokest opinion is that all the isms and phobias are, well, bad. And that they should not be set against each other in the struggle for a more just world.
my wokest opinion is that land acknowledgements are fine. people knowing a little bit about the land you're on, even if one isn't invested in a land back project, is not particularly worse than the status quo, even if one comes by this info in a way that is somewhat cringe and forced

The entire purpose of Lolita as a novel is that it's linguistic sleight of hand to goad the reader into sympathizing with an evil monster. Lots of people fall for that trap, but I wouldn't expect the fucking Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University to be one of them.
Interesting email here from Elisa New, Harvard professor and wife to Larry Summers, to Epstein, reflecting on Lolita.

Well, that's just beautiful
When Zhuangzii(莊子, late 4th century BC) ’s wife passed away, he did the unthinkable: he drummed and sang beside her body. To his shocked friends, the philosopher explained that life and death were but phases in the same cosmic rhythm. Just as mist becomes rain,

Republicans have had literally 17 years to work on a health care plan and have nothing other than

"Don't treat undocumented people at the ER"
VAN SUSTEREN: Is the Republican healthcare solution going to go into effect at midnight on Dec. 31? Because people are gonna get sticker shock

MIKE JOHNSON: We have November and December to work on it

Confrontation with the gospel's message of liberation *can* shame and defeat the powers and principalities of this world, which is why ICE and its allies have to rely on horrendously illegal and unethical uses of state power to block it.

Similarly, when @jvl.bsky.social says Trump isn’t acting like someone who plans to leave after 2028, that entails a sense that he does not plan to lose a future election—whether that’s from canceling it or simply rigging the conditions.
