Video game person: development, design and history.
Always on the lookout for cool birds.

Some extra goodies: the how to play screen, which I thought came out pretty good too.

Tried participating in #kenneyjam this weekend, but I wasn't quite able to get a finished product ready in time. So there's no submission, sadly, but instead I can show you a video of what I *was* able to get done.

It's my birthday today, so to celebrate I went down to an arcade to play the only Galaxian3 machine in the United States. Super cool game. I'm really glad I got an opportunity to try it out.

Oh awesome

For example, here's the same puzzle from earlier, but solved much more cleanly. 952 points versus the 903 points we got for the less efficient solution.

If you're unfamiliar with the game, Sutte Hakkun is a puzzle platformer where you use color to change how objects behave. It was a very late release for the Super Famicom (1997!), which is really just a way to say that it looks and sounds nice.

Excited to see that they've added Sutte Hakkun to NSO. Probably one of the best "hidden gems" of the SNES / Super Famicom library. 🎮

Here's how those numbers looked for 2023 and 2022. I'm surprised at how low 2023's percentage is.

Arguably the most interesting bit of data from the Steam Replay.

Got myself a drawing tablet today, which means it's time to screw around and make a bunch of crummy doodles while I learn how to use it. I can't actually draw for shit, but I'm having a lot of fun regardless.

So I've had this word game on my phone for a couple years now, but today I accidentally found a hidden debug code that I never knew about.
If you spell a word that's just the center letter 4 times you get this pop-up. Then, if you hit the 🔄 button, it automatically enters a valid word for you. Neat!

Reached 25 / 50 cherries today. Only a mere 125 hours to get this far. 😕

Warptank is a fun blending of puzzle and action where both halves of the design flow together in a natural, complimentary way. Your two main abilities -- warping and shooting -- serve double-duty as both puzzle-solving tools and also as means to battle threats.

The journey to get all the cherry cartridges in UFO50 continues. With Warptank cleared, we're now up to 12. I enjoyed this game a lot, so let's get into the writeup:

Bad news, we've got something that resembles a roguelike today. These are never my favorite. 😦
Well... let's try and stay positive.

Still on my journey to get all 50 cherry cartridges in UFO50, and write up my thoughts along the way. I'm at 22 so far, but today's writeup is only for cherry cartridge #11. We're halfway to being caught up! Anyways, here's Waldorf's Journey:

Like I said, Mini & Max is, in my opinion, the standout game of UFO50. It's basically what I had hoped every game in the collection was going to be like. It's a truly innovative title that stays true to the game design of the 1980's in a way that few other games in this collection have managed.
November 24, 2024 at 4:13 AM
And that's game #10. We're now 20% of the way to getting all cherry cartridges in UFO50! Today's game, Mini & Max, might be my favorite in the whole collection, so let's discuss.

I'm not really sure what to say about this one. Mooncat is an experimental platformer with a bizarre control scheme set in a surrealist world, and the game leaves you entirely on your own to make sense of it all. That's right, from the most meager basics to the deepest mysteries, it's all up to you!

I've been writing up my thoughts on the UFO50 games as I complete them, and today we've got quite an odd one. Here's cherry cartridge #9: Mooncat!

Hyper Contender, like Velgress, is another one of UFO 50's strange anachronisms. It's not exactly a fighting game, but it's clearly based around them. Considering the game's in-universe release date of 1988, it makes it another instance of a UFO 50 game that predates its influences.

It's been a while, and now I'm even further behind on cataloguing my completionist journey through UFO 50. Oh well, let's just pick up where we left off!
Today we've got cherry cartridge #8: Hyper Contender.

It's funny, up to this point I had played UFO 50 exclusively with a controller, but in order to get the cherry on this one I had to switch to using my keyboard.
Why's that, you ask? Well, because it's a lot easier for me to mash buttons on a keyboard versus a controller.

Continuing my quest to get all 50 cherry cartridges in UFO 50 (and share my thoughts along the way). Today's game, Ninpek, marks clear #7, and here's what I have to say about that:

As an addendum, I wanted to briefly mention the actual shooting mechanics. Switching between the two firing modes was very reminiscent of Technosoft's Hyper Duel, which I thought was pretty neat. Could that have been the inspiration? Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me.
