Relapse is one helluva thing, Husk thinks blearily. His paws seem so far away. His entire body is liquid right now, wings spread across the slightly sticky casino floor, a few shades too bright to be blood. Who the fuck let this go so long without cleaning? Who the fuck let it turn from luxury to just another bullshit bar in hell? Right. It's one helluva thing, and he's back to where he always ends up after gambling away all his money, broke and drunk and miserable. This time it wasn't his soul, locked up tight with Alastor, or even the beginnings of other people's shit, just any savings he'd begun to put aside for… what exactly? A shitty one bed rental somewhere close to a bar where he'd keep his head down, work and gamble and drink and sleep? Something more hopeful? Something he skirts around the edges of in his anger and misery? It's not worth thinking about. He lives and eats and drinks at the hotel free of charge, and that's a lot for a sinner like him that always ends up back where he started, at the bottom of a bottle and penniless, the rush of the win completely dissipated. The worst part of it, Husk thinks, is that now he doesn’t even have Angel to go back to. Not that they were- they weren’t- it doesn’t matter. Piano keys tinkle, tapping out the start to something sleazy, and Husk pulls himself upright, the room tipping in a nauseating slide. He squints hard at the performer on stage, and sighs to realise it’s a rabbit demon, alluring in voice, but ultimately not who Husk had been hoping to see on stage. He’s been hoping every time he’s ended up here at the bar, watching the stage show, that he might just see Angel once more. He tries not to think about how every time, the weight of his own loneliness crushes him again as he stares at someone beautiful that isn't Angel. Husk breathes out a long sigh and throws back the dregs of his whisky. Carefully pulling himself back up onto unsteady paws, he starts the search for the exit. Carpet patterns ripple before his eyes, the sounds of chiming slot machines pulling his attention. Without another dollar to his name right now, there's nothing he can do about it, but they beckon anyway, flashing lights and tumbling reels and the sweet sweet sound of the win. He lingers by a sinner's shoulder, only to watch with disappointment as they too run out of money, slumping forward. There's nothing here for Husk right now. It's not home with the yearning that tugs at his brain. Finally, he stumbles out into the street. “My dear fellow-” comes a familiar voice as he drags himself past the entrance to an alleyway. “Fuck off, Alastor,” Husk mumbles, but pulls up short anyway. His Overlord materialises out of the shadows, smile first, unnerving bastard that he is. “Slacking on duty, are we?” “Agreed I could have the evening off with Vaggi,” Husk grunts, stuffing his paws into his pockets. Alastor seems sceptical, cocking his head as Husk begins to walk again, focusing hard on showing no weakness in front of the bastard, reining in his dragging feet, watching carefully for the cracks that’ll send him stumbling. The radio demon falls into step beside Husk anyway. “You know that’s not what I mean.” Right. The ‘duty’ hotel staff hold to be examples of the way Charlie wants demons to live. “Night off. Not on duty.” He’s deliberately being obtuse, he knows, but like Alastor, he gets the intricacies of wording in a deal. He might be down and out of the Overlord game, but he still knows his way around these power games. Husk doesn’t have to look up to see the quirk of lips that accompanies the hum Alastor gives him.
