Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Children have unique injury patterns and substantial differences in their response to trauma when compared with adults; this requires special consideration when addressing the assessment and management of pediatric trauma.

June 19 is World Sickle Cell Day. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin, in which sickling of red blood cells results in hemolysis and vasoocclusion. Newborn screening has led to early identification of SCD in many regions across Canada.

We've reviewed our Status Epilepticus resource. Status Epilepticus is a time-sensitive emergency, since untreated seizures lead to more seizures and delayed treatment contributes to morbidity and mortality.

June 10 is Action Anxiety Day. Anxiety is a normal emotional and physiological response to uncomfortable, novel or frightening situations. During an emergency department (ED) visit, anxiety can be experienced by any child or adolescent as well as by their caregivers.

Congratulations to Dr. Veronica Lai on presenting her findings from "Evaluating the Usability of Pediatric Emergency Education Resources: A qualitative study" at the ICEM conference. Dr. Lai was previously a post-doctoral fellow with TREKK.

Our Fractures resource has been updated. Children break bones more easily than adults, so pediatric fractures are very common.
