Yup. Our foundation donates locally, but what it's doing fundamentally is adding a bit of spackle to the gaps. If you widen the gaps, the spackle can't suddenly act as structural support. That's what functional government is for.
Study after study after study has confirmed that charitable giving not only doesn't help nearly as many people as national/state safety net programs, charitable aid isn't as reliable as is aid coming through government-run programs. If the goal is helping people, scope and reliability are important.

So, I was holding Prim (a cat) and then accidentally stepped on Bunny Mewberg (another cat), and the sound Bunny made startled Prim, who promptly fish hooked me in the face rather deeply with a claw and got stuck.
Definitely a new experience for all of us.
