Groundwater level monitoring at Salisbury Cathedral.

Salisbury Cathedral, built in the 13th century, is the highest is the UK reaching up to 123m and is built on wet sand and gravel close to the river Avon.

The long-term goal is to achieve a neutral water balance at a local or regional level, ensuring that no net water is extracted.

Last week, TRAQUA started a dye tracing campaign to analyse real-world groundwater flow and residence times between the injection and extraction wells under pumping conditions, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the area and the potential for installing an ASR system.

In Sint-Truiden, Vrije Universiteit Brussel researchers and project partners are testing 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗔𝗦𝗥), which involves storing treated wastewater from the Aquafin site in underground chalk aquifers to serve as a buffer during dry periods.

In Belgium, the focus is on South Limburg, where the drinking water supply relies heavily on groundwater. This resource is under threat due to prolonged drought and overextraction.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, a major source of drinking water worldwide, is under pressure. This is nothing new. Over-exploitation, pollution risks and a growing list of known and unknown contaminants of emerging concern infiltrate our aquifers.

The arsenic contamination is a prime example of how well-intentioned but poorly researched drinking water solutions can end up being a 'poisonous gift'.

However, a 2016 report by Human Rights Watch criticised the government for not adequately addressing the arsenic contamination due to 'nepotism and neglect', meaning that 20 million people still drink water with increased levels of arsenic.

In 2001, it was estimated that between 28 and 46% of the population of Bangladesh was exposed to arsenic levels exceeding the WHO limit. Solutions included using deeper groundwater below 150m that tap into arsenic-free aquifers, as well as low-cost water filtration systems.
