Review of Water in the Desert, Fire in the Night by Gethan Dick: Genre-wise, large tracts of the Irish writer Gethan Dick’s debut novel, Water in the Desert, Fire in the Night, could be described as gentle apocalypse. Or softcore Armageddon, perhaps. Society has collapsed after plague and war, but while wolves do howl and marauders do maraude, such menaces feel distinctly remote. Consequently, the book opens to strange and tender emotions. A band of neighbours team up and resolve to cycle from their shattered south London street to southern France. But they don’t flee in panic. They leave only once they’ve lain on their home beds long enough to feel ready to abandon them forever. One character cannot reconcile himself to the new world, insisting that one day “the clock would run backwards and it would once again be the time of beer in taps and burgers in freezers and bread in packets and milk in cartons”. So held “by the solidity of how things had been”, he cannot understand they will never be that way again. These quiet melancholies of a slow calamity give the reader pause – especially as Dick nudges us to ask if we’re in one already.

We had a horse to take us places, the dirt track allowed no cars near us. I was four and had never seen a car, but I had seen a picture of one. We had heard of electricity but we didn’t have it. Time moved slowly then and things did not change much. The winters were colder and the summers were hotter. One such hot day Grandmother took me with her to visit her niece Miina. My hair was plaited tight till it hurt. My eyes were pulled into slits. If I had dared I would have sobbed. The boots hurt too. They were hand-me-downs from my older brother, made for him by Mother’s father, who was a shoemaker. Grandmother moved uphill along the dirt road at a steady pace like a Russian tank. It was hard to keep up.

Gethan Dick signed some copies of Water in the Desert, Fire in the Night around Dublin recently. In case you didn't get one, we also have some limited, signed bookplates!

Fayne by Ann-Marie MacDonald is a sweeping historical novel set in the 19th century. It follows Charlotte Bell, a funny, inquisitive young person raised in isolation on the vast, misty estate of Fayne, on the border of Scotland and England.

We read the essay and immediately changed our rule about non-fiction, and we asked Emilie to turn the essay into a book. Notes to Self was published in July 2018, and we think you'll agree its impact has been massive. We still get a lot of subs from authors who cite this book as a big inspiration!

Later, she performed spoken word at the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York and represented NYC in the nationals in Seattle. She studied literature at Hunter College, and it was while she was getting her MFA in New York that she began the novel that would become Problems. Jade Sharma died in 2019.
