How IMLS Funding Supports Kansans IMLS allocated $2.1 million in 2024 to support Kansas libraries through the State Library of Kansas. IMLS funds support the following Kansas library programs Statewide Databases & Learning Tools Every Kansan has access to research databases and learning tools. These resources support community members, students at every education level, lifelong learners, job seekers, and entrepreneurs in their personal and professional development. With the support of IMLS funding, the State Library licenses these resources – at substantial cost savings – and makes them accessible to Kansans from any location or device. Resource Sharing (Interlibrary Loan) Every Kansan can request books not available at their local library. A statewide system, funded with IMLS monies, allows libraries to share book availability and to request materials from other libraries. Through this service, libraries efficiently pool their resources to support all Kansans’ access to a wider range of resources than their local library may be able to provide alone. Talking Books Every Kansan with a visual impairment or other print disability has access to more than 131,000 books, 100 magazines, and other resources through the Talking Books program. Services also include personalized assistance, reading request recommendations, read-aloud weather and job alerts, and news services. This IMLS funded program builds community among too-often isolated Kansans. IMLS also funds ‣ Digital Books: Provides a variety of reading materials including eBooks and audiobooks. ‣ Continuing Educa on for Librarians: Funds professional development resources for librarians across the state. ‣ Summer Reading: Provides summer reading materials to Kansas libraries. ‣ Kansas Notable Books: Recognizes 15 outstanding titles annually either written by Kansans or about a Kansas-related topic.
