It’s okay, I just really miss coming home to those 20% off coupons loyally and reassuringly arriving in the mail after a hard day at work. We’d put on 1989 and dance together.

As a passionate Bed, Bath, and Beyond fan, I have to tell you that BB&B was tragically liquidated in 2023, after a long chapter 11, so this analogy is really insensitive to me. BB&B under the new Overstock.com brand auspices just doesn’t hit the same.

I totally understand where you're coming from vis a vee that essay. That said, I think I'm not representative of the phenomenon you're discussing, so if you were willing to drop me from the list, I would appreciate it! Thanks for the work you do!

For me, part of thinking about this era as a trans person--including defying the regime, means being occasionally outside it for perspective and regrouping, and I wouldn't consider that representative of trans people at large, or use a word like refugee to describe myself. Thanks!

Appreciate this, but just a bit of clarity: I still live primarily in the US, and while I believe that self-exile is an established strategy for artists in the Americas (Baldwin in Europe, any number of Latin American writers from right-wing regimes), I have not been forced to flee.

I wish! How I long to sample the famed Lawrence culinary specialty: "the beverage." Hope it's a fun book night! <3

I have always said that, as a trans person, I am a dishonest grappler. When it comes to science...well, I will eye-gouge a science. I will wedgie a science. When the ref isn't looking, I stick a finger in the butt of science and then go for the pin.

This is so lovely, thank you!

Also really happy Random House production took a chance on some literal voices rare in audiobook readings: half my readers have gorgeous trans femme voices and the other half of my readers have extreme-dude voices (toxic soccer bro, gravely old-time lumberjack)

"razing Kenosha?" Lol. How true! I remember well the splash of Viking oars as the sackers ran pillaging and burning our meager straw huts taking for themselves the precious grain we had stored for the winter, while we lamented shrilly in smoking fields beyond Big Boy. Nothing is left.
