Numbats are generally considered to be termitivorous and have teeth whereas echidnas in the same area eat ants, termites and cockchafer larvae and have no teeth and a much slimmer snout.

I did contact the Smithsonian magazine and had a response from a science editor which led to an hour-long friendly FaceTime discussion about monotreme myths. The reason I mentioned you on BlueSky was when I checked what the current on-line consensus was your article was one of the first to come up.

Nobody is litigating anything. We are discussing scientific data and its interpretation. In my response to Ed I raised some broader biological questions arising from the paper he might be interested in - relating to the costs of acid secretion and the widespread use of proton pump inhibitors.

I emailed Ed Yong and he simply said "that story was one of several hundred written that year, and I had no memory of it until now" which I think was disappointing.

I didn't think I was targeting you - I thought that you would be interested and as a science communicator that you would want to get the facts right. If you read the paper you will see I start with Yong and Newer's articles. The papers concerned are critiqued.
