The Fed has a good explainer on this. And again at least up until 2023 we have not seen the affordability gains at the top of the market reach the bottom. www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2025...

Lastly I compared demographics of precincts split by winner and household income. Housing tenure varies significantly between lower-income Frey precincts compared to Fatah’s. 75% of households in lower-income Fateh precincts were renters compared to only 44% in lower-income Frey precincts.

SW and lakes in Wards 10 and 11 correlate with Mayor Frey’s key demographics — higher-income homeowner-heavy precincts. Also downtown in Ward 3, Audubon Park, and Waite Park in Northeast . Additionally, Frey won 19 lower-income precincts, mostly on the Northside.

However this was not universal. There were lower-income precincts won by Frey and higher-income precincts won by Fateh. I define "high income" as higher than city median (~$80k)

Next I looked at the demographis of an average Frey-won precinct vs a Fateh won precinct. Same story as before. Frey precints = whiter, higher income, Older, homeowner heavy. While Fateh precincts were the opposite - lower income, more racially diverse, renter heavy and housing cost-burdened.

Frey vote share was negatively correlated with share of workers that take transit, housing cost burden, share renters, share non-english speakers and share BIPOC residents.

You can read about my methods in the post, but in short I estimated precinct demos using census tracts. When we look at various characteristics and Frey vote share, we can see that highest correlation was with median household income (0.75). Higher the precinct income = higher Frey vote share.

Finally finished my blog post on the Minneapolis Mayoral Election and demographics. I posted it to an old medium account that I forgot I had. Let me know what you think. Here's what I found 🧵 medium.com/@damia025/pr...
