Sadly, my elder child is allergic to lentils, but we can do chickpeas! They take a little longer but same principle holds.

If you haven’t read the book, I recommend reading it first. (I read it this weekend.) It is so worth it on its own, and will I think give the movie more resonance. 4/4

You must see this film. If you are worth anything it will hurt you, but it is the best adaptation of a book into a movie I’ve ever seen, and it is astonishing filmmaking, and it is a howl of grief and anger and love in the face of whatever it was that happened in the capitol today. 3/

The filmmakers invent a symbolic motif of an alligator that is not in the book but (along with so much else in the film) underlines the danger, violence, and viciousness in this country. 2/

Always an excellent choice. So many things about 100 Years are amazing, but one of my favorite lines in literature is the one about winsome being worth nothing if it can’t be used to invent a new way to prepare chickpeas. Truer words …
