This is a river redhorse, a bottom-feeding fish native to the Appalachians. I don’t know what possessed him to take a trout fly, but when he felt the hook he fought hard. He’s none the worse for wear, though. I released him back into the Tuckaseegee River. #fishing

Colorful brook trout, the only trout native to Virginia and North Carolina. Released him (and several of his friends) back into the Tuckaseegee River.

Halloween fundraiser as a 1920s gangster. I can’t do a Chicago accent, so I’ll be Al Capone’s Southern cousin, Earl. Prohibition is great down here. My drivers are soupin’ up cars to outrun feds. Cars look stock so’s not to draw attention. My boys say that will turn into a big motorsport someday.

A little research at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Behind me is the U-505, the only German submarine boarded and captured by the U.S. during #WWII. Came here for the first time a while back when working on my novel SILVER WINGS, IRON CROSS.

My thanks to the Alexandria-Caen Sisters Cities program for the opportunity to discuss the French Resistance and my #WWII novel THE MAPMAKER at the Lyceum last night.

A Margarita in my OSS Society glass that honors teams that jumped into occupied France during #WWII to aid the Resistance. Part of the research for my novel THE MAPMAKER. Because, you know, #cocktails are research. Really.

The Order of Liberation Medal honored people or groups who supported the liberation of #France during #WWII. I think my characters Charlotte Denneau and Philippe Gerard, from my novel THE MAPMAKER, would have qualified.

A homemade radio used by the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation. This type of communication figures in my upcoming #WWII novel, THE MAPMAKER, now available for pre-order. #france #military #resistance

Honored to celebrate Canada’s Military Day (much like our own Armed Forces Day) with our neighbors to the north at the Embassy of Canada in Washington.

The Grand Hotel in Zell am See, Austria. Easy Company, of “Band of Brothers” fame, spent time here at the end of #WWII. Pretty nice digs.

Hate had a home here. But we can say that in past tense, fortunately. Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest,” Berchtesgaden, Germany. #WWII

During a recent tour of #WWII sites in Europe, I met two actors from the “Band of Brothers” HBO series. Ross McCall (center) played Joe Liebgott, and Robin Laing (right) played Babe Heffron. They offered fascinating insights into the making of the series and the history behind it. #ww2travel

The Blue Boar pub in Aldbourne, England, where members of the 101st Airborne trained prior to D-Day. First stop on a great tour of #WWII sites with the National WWII Museum. #ww2travel #militaryhistory
