standard explanation makes a distinction between synaptic (fast) and systems consolidation (slow). One explanation for why systems consolidation takes longer is that rapid learning would cause catastrophic interference with existing knowledge. See e.g., pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
