To be honest, I was never super interested in early American history until I read Chernow's Hamilton, which changed my perception of biographies and sent me down a rabbit hole. Couldn't get enough after that.

Destiny of the Republic is probably my favorite non-fiction book about US history, and the show nails it, considering its brevity. But the book gives an even better picture of the spoils system and how Garfield's assassination led to a professional civil service.
