Some thoughts I wrote on a famous line from Tolkien...

I'm curious; in your own opinion, why do you think people are so fascinated with learning about Tolkien as a person and studying his works so deeply?

They don't make things like they used to.

Just started really digging around in these Reader's Guides and OH MY - what a treasure trove of information, quoted letters, references from lectures, books. Not sure if there is anything as comprehensive as this. Brilliant for any #Tolkien nerd!

"Then slept Eriol, and through his dreams there came a music thinner and more pure than any he heard before, and it was full of longing... but as I listened I wished to follow I know not whom, I know not wither, out into the magic of the world beneath the stars."

Tolkien is wild for this! In the preface of the second edition of FotR he wrote:

"Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works..."

Less Netflix and more of this...

Yes, I am the kind of person that listens to the LOTR soundtrack in the background as I work (and as I clean the house, smoke a pipe, drive in the car, play a board game, etc.)

The Snake-Crusher. The Dragon-Slayer. The Chaos-Redeemer. The Storm-Silencer. The Sacrificial Lamb. The God-man!

This is why Tolkien called the Gospel the True Myth — a story more wondrous than legend, and yet as real as the dirt beneath our feet.

"I am (obviously) much in love with plants and above all trees, and always have been; and I find human maltreatment of them as hard to bear as some find ill-treatment of animals."

Took a day trip with the family to Yosemite. This is Rivendell, Lothlorien and more all in one. Pure enchantment.

An important memory from Tolkien's childhood. Maybe Tolkien's Mom is the reason we have the world of Middle-earth !!

A poem on the sacredness of early mornings:

Just finished Beowulf for the first time. This was a very enjoyable translation. There is something that seems to always awaken in me when I read of valor in the face of death and themes of fate and destiny! What a poem!

Why yes, I do have a folder of over 900 BTS photos from the making of LOTR by Wētā.

“I have not studied them [fairy-stories] professionally. I have been hardly more than a wandering explorer (or trespasser) in the land, full of wonder but not of information.”

As I get older, this is all I want at night:
Quiet. A pipe. A fire. A good book.

Just read the scene where Èomer finds out that Èowyn, his sister, is on the battlefield - and thinking her dead he rides with rage and shouts:

"Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!"
Few lines are more epic than this.

“The Resurrection was the greatest ‘eucatastrophe’ possible in the greatest Fairy Story…Of course I do not mean that the Gospels tell what is only a fairy-story; but I do mean very strongly that they do tell a fairy-story: the greatest.”

- Tolkien (Letter 89)

“Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.”

- The Return of the King

Leave it to the French to make Bilbo look like he’s on a chic nature retreat instead of a dragon heist.
