It seems to me that many have still not fully understood that Trump simply does not want to play the role that Europeans want him to play. He does not want to provide security guarantees for 🇺🇦, neither in the first nor in the second line. No 'strong US backing' will materialize.

In Germany, this is only slowly dawning on people. We need to link economic and security policy much more closely in our minds than we have done so far. It's good that we have such a report. Now we have to act on it.
A report commissioned by the German defense ministry says Beijing could purposefully delay wind projects, harvest sensitive data and remotely shut down turbines if given access to wind farms.

Domestically, Trump/Musk have a clear plan. It’s only a matter of how far they’ll go.

Foreign policy wise, as the mixed messaging shows, the US admin doesn’t have a clear picture of what they want or how to get it. Europe can still shape the direction by setting terms and pushing back.

Lots of concern in EU capitals this eve. A sense Trump has given Putin a lot today - on substance (no NATO accession) & optics (symbolism of phone call at the same time as the UDCG meeting). Is this the beginning of a process where the EU's interests will now be jeopardised? That's the fear

Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity are unconditional.

Our priority must now be strengthening Ukraine and providing robust security guarantees.

In any negotiation, Europe must have a central role.
