any kind of maneuvering (driving in reverse, making a turn etc) is explicitly prohibited and everyone knows this, you're not supposed to do anything but drive forward to cross it, you're not allowed to come to a stop on them, it's drilled into us from when we're young! when we're on foot/bike too

the systems are automatic, they get triggered when a train passes through them 800-1000m away. trains pass multiple times an hour, in some places that's every few minutes, you're not supposed to do ANYTHING but cross them INSTANTLY
