Single and broke in my twenties, I started crafting Christmas ornaments-crewel, cross stitch, needlepoint, and sewing felt pieces. I sewed ribbons on happy meal Peanuts characters, Starbucks gift card holders, or small things to reuse. Doesn’t have to cost much, but it’s meaningful.

Just shopped for the grandchildren. AI slop on graphic T-shirts. Terrible shades of red and green and cheap fabric for Christmas clothing. After tariffs, the retailers freaked out and cut quality on everything. I’m fabric painting a white T-shirt this year.

I went to bed at 11:30 last night because after watching amazing baseball for 6 and a half hours, I was sad there had to be a loser. It’s really not winning or losing, it’s how we play the game. So Canada, most of us don’t want anyone to be the loser in trade either.

I made a witch’s cape for my granddaughter out of a pair of dress pants that I no longer use. We can reuse old clothes for costumes, doll clothes, and quilts. She doesn’t notice that it’s not perfect. She’s thrilled.

A great winter meal is French onion soup. Tyler Florence has a great recipe where he uses red wine instead of sherry. I also mix beef and chicken broth bc chicken broth is cheaper. You can use different hard cheeses instead of Gruyère. And use stale bread. Feeds 4 for $17.

The lose-lose dynamic seems to be on Elon Musk’s mind right now. He loses buyers of Teslas and loses employees in his companies and it must make him feel good to try to tank Netflix. I’m sure not influenced by that dynamic. Here to stay, Netflix.

We are peacefully protesting. They are kidnapping and hurting us.

Made ice cream with my granddaughter today. It costs twice as much as buying a carton. But we tell ourselves it’s a science experiment that brings a delightful smile to her face.

Making cinnamon rolls with my granddaughter put a smile on my face today. What a bad news day. I may eat a lot of these, but hey, I’m not putting icing on them so I save some calories.

RFK is wrong to discourage vaccines and mRNA research. I had pneumonia one year before the recommended pneumonia vaccine and it took months to feel like myself. I got shingles before the recommended shingles vaccine. But I got Covid three years later after being in Covid vaccine trials. Mild case.

Got the second shingles shot. Had a sore neck for two days, but after having a nickel size eruption seventeen years ago with six months of residual nerve pain, I’m not complaining. Malcolm Gladwell has an interesting chapter on antivaxxers in his new book.

I’m so upset Congress is clawing back PBS funding. kid’s programming is a necessity as a grandma. I also learned how to cook seasonally from PBS cooking shows. If you learn lots of recipes, you save money and learn shortcuts. Younger people need to develop these skills.

There is now a pizza yeast that makes it so easy to make dough. And using bread flour for us has worked out better than all purpose flour.

RIP beautiful lady. I will miss the weekly question, ”Is that a wolf?” No, she is a proud shepherd, husky, Samoyed mix. She was a great companion. We miss her.

Eighteen hour whole wheat bread. Recipes are online. Just mix about $2.50 worth of flours, yeast, salt, and water. Wait 18 hours. Bake in a Dutch oven or Lodge cast iron pot. Yum.

Things I’ve learned for No Buy movement. Instead of take out, we buy frozen chicken nuggets and use the rest of our fresh vegetables. I buy a jar of yeast and make eighteen hour bread and overnight yeasted waffles. Rising dough works well in oven with oven light on.

On Rick Steve’s PBS show about Siena, Italy, he shows a mural from the Renaissance that shows the consequences of good government and bad government. Seems like an apt visual for our times.

I finally got my shingles shot. Took Tylenol for arm soreness and I was fine. I can’t believe I put it off. The pharmacist said that one third of seniors will get shingles unless they are vaccinated.

People that want an inexpensive meat dish should consider pork shoulder. We smoke one every month and have a cut piece with potatoes, then shred it and make sliders and then pork tacos. We are enjoying the tacos tonight.

For the people who think Megan Markle is unrelatable and talentless, her focaccia bread is easy, fantastic and costs about $2.50 for ingredients.
