A huge bravo to all the volunteers making this mission against #rabies possible, especially the #veterinary students from the Royal University of Agriculture #RUA in Cambodia and the international volunteers from Worldwide Veterinary Service #WVS.

Yesterday, I witnessed the scale of this operation in Phnom Penh:
1. Over 100 tuk-tuks mobilized to transport #vaccination teams
2. Thousands of #rabies vaccine doses administered
3. An intense door-to-door search to reach every possible dog
4. Seamless coordination through a dedicated app

A powerful example of #OneHealth in action!

#Rabies still kills around 60,000 people every year worldwide, despite being a fully preventable disease though the #vaccination of dog populations.

Since 2023, @missionrabies.bsky.social has been carrying out massive vaccination campaigns in #Cambodia.

So grateful to be part of a system that values scientific expertise for making evidence-based decisions! 🌍🇪🇺

Intense days at @efsa.europa.eu to finalise the annual report analysing the 2024 epidemiological situation on African swine fever #ASF in Europe. Released in May.

International collaborations in #science is one of the most exciting parts of the job!
Just coming back from a 2-day scientific visit at the #UAB 🇪🇸, where I taught their #OneHealth master students and touched base on a series of #research projects related to #livestock farm #biosecurity.

Thrilled to share our work on the influence of wild boar density on the spread of African swine fever #ASF in northern Italy (Jan 2022 - Sep 2023).
Our model reproduced observed ASF dynamics and showed that wild boar density shaped the second ASF wave only.

[PhD position] Please share!

Looking for a motivated PhD candidate to work in our MSCA Doctoral Network #VIVACE (vivace.hub.inrae.fr/news2) on highly pathogenic avian influenza #HPAI transmission #modelling to inform vaccination strategies.

Did not really know what to expect from this first scientific visit to #NCHU, Taiwan 🇹🇼.
But I have been overwhelmed by scientific soundness, visionary research, openess and kindness!
Hopefully the beginning of long-term collaborations!
Thanks Dr. Day-Yu Chao for making this possible!

Glad to be back in Hanoi, for the first leg of my Asian tour!
Today: regional consultation on environmental surveillance of avian influenza viruses in live-bird markets by FAO Asia-Pacific.
With @brandonhayes.bsky.social
But having a meeting straight after a sleeplessnight in the plane is hard! Zzz.

Intense days at UAB, Barcelona, discussing with the master students the relevance of disease modelling for improving highly pathogenic avian influenza #HPAI management, brainstorming with A. Allepuz et al. on #biosecurity and risk assessment (BIOSECURE EU-project), and... devouring (too much) ham! 😍

Everything you always dreamt to know about avian influenza transmission is finally synthesised in a single paper that presents all epidemiological insights gained from the modelling of historical epidemics (2004-2022).

Hope you will find it useful!

At the #GeoVet23 conference, with @brandonhayes.bsky.social and Jun-Sik Lim presenting their work on multi-host modelling of African swine fever #ASF transmission and on the evaluation of intervention strategies against ASF in South Korea. Well done guys!
And awesome stage!

Congratulations @brandonhayes.bsky.social for your contribution to the complex field of #transmission of infectious diseases between #livestock and #wildlife!

African swine fever #ASF keeps spreading inexorably... Sweden has just "joined the club", with one wild boar testing positive (so far).

In one month to the day, #France will start vaccinating massively its #ducks against avian influenza (#HPAI)!

There is no precedent in the European Union where #vaccination used to be prohibited for international trade reasons.

In short, reducing duck farm density in the 20% densest municipalities is not sufficient. So now, it is paramount to investigate the effect of other strategies on #HPAI virus transmission dynamics, such as flock size reduction, confinement of outdoor flocks and #vaccination.

Even in the most stringent scenario, the basic reproction number (R0) remained higher than 1.5 in wide regions, suggesting that reducing duck farm densities in the 20% densest municipalities would not have been sufficient to completely prevent HPAI virus from spreading.
