There's a ton of great stuff in @lioneltrolling.bsky.social 's 'When The Clock Broke' deserving of a fuller review

...but this tidbit about "new class theory" feels particularly relevant to how Trump uses populism to shield (favored) corporate elites from scrutiny.

EIA making the originalist argument for running the country entirely on renewables*. If it was good enough for the founders, it should be good enough for us, right SCOTUS?

Nice clear temperature graphic from this NYT article.

“Each additional fractional degree of warming brings about a relatively larger increase in atmospheric extremes, like extreme downpours and severe droughts and wildfires,” said @weatherwest.bsky.social

A small thing that struck me in the weird NYT story on trans rights is this "strictest scientific" double standard.

I'm not an expert on the literature, but I'd bet this high bar is never ever applied to the TN law or any other anti-trans policies.

Nationally, Black & Hispanic Americans would experience pollution from LNG terminals at 110–170% rate of white Americans

The most impacted areas are already overburdened w other pollution & climate threats

Results are consistent w health and EJ concerns that Gulf communities have long voiced 7/x

We estimated cumulative 2023-2050 impacts under different buildout scenarios.

The "operating projects only" scenario leads to 2,020 deaths and $28.7 B in health costs.

The "full buildout" scenario leads to 4,470 premature deaths and $62.2 B in heath costs. 6/x
August 22, 2024 at 5:03 PM
To capture the impact of the LNG buildout, we created a database of permitted emissions limits of PM2.5, NOx, SO2 and VOCs for 32 operating, under construction and planned LNG projects. The data was drawn from draft and final air permits. 3/x

*New Report* from #greenpeaceusa and #sierraclub on air pollution from LNG export terminals.

Our results suggest this air pollution is already causing scores of premature deaths annually in Texas, Louisiana & regionally.

Stopping the LNG buildout would improve health and save lives. 🧵 1/x

The combination of these factors shows that CC can increase local co-pollutant emissions.

This is especially concerning during the “mid-transition” – the period when both carbon and non-carbon electrical generation is active. 6/x

Surprisingly, we find that stronger climate targets can lead to more CC generation & can shift some generation from gas to coal.

The availability of CC could lead to coal plants running more often & could extend the lifetime of these plants in contrast to other scenarios. 5/x
August 12, 2024 at 8:38 PM
We consider a 3-node system that can deploy CC on a gas or coal plant, under both a mild and stringent climate target, and a range of installed wind capacity. 4/x

We are pleased to announce a new paper where we investigate the potential impacts of carbon capture (CC) on air quality. A short thread 1/x

Greenpeace is being sued by a pipeline company for showing solidarity with the 2016-17 #NoDAPL protests.

A win for them in court establishes chilling new case law that could make activists and organizations liable for anything done by another protester at the same events. #WeWillNotBeSilenced

Very interesting look at how energy inefficient the fossil fuel system is. Courtesy of RMI.

Plus I love a good sankey diagram.

The president of COP 28 just claimed that there is “no science” behind the need to phase out fossil fuels in order to limit global warming to 1.5˚C.

It all makes sense when you remember he heads up an oil company.
