Last week we joined the Bob Brown Foundation once again for their annual Art for Takayna fieldtrip. This year we ventured to the coast, but with the rivers run dry, we relocated to the forests, revisiting old friends of the still standing Sumac SU055C foresty coupe, Takayna, Lutruwita/Tasmania 🍃
A pair of old moss covered myrtles (nothofagus cunninghamii) grounded in an open rainforest of Takayna, Tasmania. Soft morning light provides depth and subtle warmth to the scene.

A misty rainforest valley with towering soft tree ferns (dicksonia antarctica) in the heart of Takayna/Tarkine. A valley that is intended to become suffocated beneath a pool of toxic tailings from a foreign owned mining company.

Wulinantikala/Cradle Mountain. Framed photographic print on archival platine fibre rag paper. Day one of traversing the Overland Track by foot. Six days of walking among a tapestry of Autumn colour and cloud. 2 - Elemental Flow, Laymanika, Takayna/Tarkine Coast. Framed photographic print on archival platine fibre rag paper. Laymanika, Takayna/Tarkine: Walking among the powerful cultural landscape which has withstood the test of time, weathered and shaped by geological events before our time. A living landscape, jagged flame-like rocks where coastal life prevails, a mystical, raw, and sometimes overwhelming sensation of awe washes over from being drawn into this contoured landscape. The cloud and passing rainshowers creating the ever-changing mood of Laymanika, Takayna. 3 - Autumn Tapestry, Wulinantikala/Cradle Mountain. Premium stretched canvas print with floating frame. Gondwanan forests of Lutruwita / Tasmania: As if going back in time, among forests with natural decay, gnarled root networks splay out like a carpet of moss from aged trees, their lives still threatened by exploitative industry pursuits such as logging and mining. Above Maytim / Arthur River at the northern edge of Takayna / Tarkine, Coupe PU038B still stands.

Leeawuleena/Lake St Clair exhibition space Spring Frost - A photograph displaying a small frozen tarn, surrounded by white frost covered lawns and scattered clusters of richea scoparia. The scene leads through to a pencil pine forest beneath a looming dolerite peak all blanketed in soft early morning light, a balance of warm and cool tones throughout. Autumn Stream - A small alpine stream cascading through the rocky mountainside, natural tannins bring warmth to the scene. The stream is obscured by branching nothofagus gunnii, most fagus leaves are vibrantly green with several yellow leaves scattered throughout, indicating the start of the annual 'turning of the fagus'. Maytim Adrift - A large river, with slowly flowing bubbles. A small shrub island is central in the frame, with the opposite bank visible, but obscured by the morning mist. The bank has silhouetted stags, remnants of the past season's bushfires. The full scene is reflected in the glassy water.

The Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher is endangered under both the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Fewer than 250 mature birds are now believed to exist, primarily from the loss of habitat through clearing of riverine vegetation.

Laymanika Surge 🌊

Waves lap and the ocean surges, the rock echoes the thunderous roar as the squall rolls blustering through, this is Laymanika, the wildness of Takayna.

A wild and rugged coastline of contorted geology, a wash of waves, swirling rikawa (kelp) and incoming showers. The Takayna coastline is truly exposed, the next landform to the west is Patagonia.
