Midnight on the Tikitrocious Moonlight Encore! Terminally-ill Hugh implores Rick, Dan and Sara to avoid the mistakes he and Ken made. The triangle-turned-triumvirate steer their family past a conglomerate’s construction scheme in “Honor, Verdigris, Love (2002).”

This week on the Midday Matinee, we show the last five “Verdigris Bullets” movies from 1997-2002. The Mizarī Studios productions continue to borrow from west and east for the popular crime melodrama. Join us!

Text includes: Luxembourgish comic creator Noah Damien Molitor, a.k.a. “NDM,” plotted his soft reboot (‘Act 2’) of his comic “Armes Verdoyantes” (English, “Verdant Guns”) in 1989 and executed the death of his protagonist Ken in 1991. The love-triangle between Kenneth Harrell (a.k.a. Kenichi or Ken Hirano), his sorta-love interest Karen (Karine) and his love interest Hugh Taggertson (a.k.a. Haru or Hugh Takeuchi) had come to its inevitable conclusion of death. Most readers concluded Karen was nothing more than a heteronormative-smokescreen obscuring the homoeroticism. Consider the context, as explained in a 1996 interview by NDM: “Back then (‘60s-’70s), I thought of bisexuality as wishy-washy—a lack of courage to come out and commit your true self. A lot of the gay and lesbian community of the time felt that ‘gayer-than-thou’ attitude. Slowly, I learned better. “Karine was an ambivalent character. Most readers realized she was there to stop close-minded authorities from censoring the book. But she also served the same narrative function within the plot: to placate Ken and Hugh’s families. But that made her a rather passive presence. “For ‘Act 2,’ I wanted to play with variations on the original years. While I built up to Ken’s death, I decided Karine’s replacement would be more dynamic to the story; I wanted her to have some agency, and just be more interesting! “The next generation of my male protagonists, as infatuated as they were with each-other, changed not just to accommodate this, but give me the right amount of plot variation. Now they were a real love triangle!” Since 1968, the Japanese imported and localized “Armes Verdoyantes/Verdant Guns” as “緑豊かな弾丸/Midori Yutakana Dangan” (Eng: ”Lush Bullets”). When translator and project coordinator Katō Miho retired in 1989, the project fell to good hands with her protegee Nishizawa Rina. NDM flew to Japan without warning once again to have a good drinking and screaming match (or “off-site working session,” as they humorously called it) with Nishizawa Rina. They called in Katō Miho for old time’s sake. While Nishizawa Rina didn’t advertise it, she herself was bisexual. The 1990 meetup gave NDM a chance to refine his ideas with his two strongest creative partners, and consider perspectives he hadn’t fully explored in the past. Mizarī Studios continued to make the film adaptations of the series, but their financial fortunes were not as bright as they once were. They rushed out the films with mostly-faithful scripts but lower production budgets. Mizarī took a chance by casting the Rick and Dan actors from the then rising boy band, NOBR Vagabonds. The chemistry they shared on screen only fueled speculation as to what their relationship was behind the scenes (but was later confirmed to be “just friends”).

Starting tonight on the Moonlight Encore, we show the first five “Verdigris Bullets” movies from 1972-1994. These Mizarī Studios productions sport a pedigree of influences that stretches from west to east and back again to produce something timeless and wonderful. Join us!

"NDM was exposed to American gangster, noir, and German expressionist films after the war, as well as magical realism fiction. This cocktail gave “Verdant Guns” a deliberately dream-like, timeless quality that eschewed strict causality in favor of a melodramatic inevitability. "“Verdant Guns” portrayed the heirs to rival organized crime families. They navigated their families’ rivalry and their intense loyalty to each-other. Some sheltered readers overlooked the homo-erotic subtext, preferring to interpret the relationship as “just friends.” "Starting 1968, the Japanese imported and localized “Armes Verdoyantes/Verdant Guns” as “緑豊かな弾丸/Midori Yutakana Dangan” (Eng: ”Lush Bullets”). The localized translation glossed over some more Eurocentric concepts, instead heightening the magical realism from 9 to 11. "NDM had qualms about the localization, and it came to a head in 1971 when, unannounced, he flew to Japan and showed up at the publisher’s office to drag chief translator/project manager Katō Miho (working under a male pen name) out for a screaming-and-drinking session." Text reads: "The “off-site working session” led to a creative collaboration that lasted decades, and a twice-yearly tradition of NDM joining Mrs. Katō and her family on vacations across the world even after her retirement in 1989. "Katō Harue, husband of the localization manager and a director of photography at Mizarī Studios (known for their Saramandāsai series) brought the comic to the attention of studio head Mizarī Zenzō. He soon licensed the material. "Mizarī decided Niigata would stand in for “Port City,” the fictional amalgam of several European and New World locations. Mizarī Studios shot “Midori Yutakana Dangan” with few plot changes despite the obviously Japanese exterior scenery. "Originally, Mizarī Studios did not seek foreign distribution. It wasn’t until the early ‘80s that a Los Angeles film professor showed the first film to his classes using clumsy subtitles, translated as “Verdigris Bullets.” This became the official English-market title."
