Fall! Time to dub my roughout boots with Huberd’s Shoe Grease, a dark gray-green mixture of beeswax and pine tar that smells like souvenir tarred-twine monkey’s-fist knots from a nautical gift shop.

Since 1855, the Wagner Free Institute of Science in North Philly has been and continues to teach free(!) science classes from their elegantly palatial-and-endearingly-shabby museum and lecture hall.

The Wagner is a functioning, active science museum packed to the […]

I took a serger class at Hayes Sewing in Delaware yesterday.

In the first minute of the class, Stephanie Hayes comes and strips all the threading from our sergers. “Okay, you’re in the big leagues now!” snip] [yank] [<a href="/hashtag/sewing" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link">#sewing

Hayes has INCREDIBLE classes for all […]

A bicycle ride on the Schuylkill River Trail was WONDERFUL this morning. Super-duper packed (up by the art museum) but everyone seemed chill and the bicyclists and walkers were coexisting peacefully. The weather was superlative.

Transplanted lettuce into the cold frame today. This is the first time using the cold frame in a while. I’ve been happy with our decision to scale our ambitions WAAAAY back. Four heads!

I joined a Marxist reading group on WeChat; we are working through Henri Lefebvre, whom I had never read before. I’m _really_ enjoying it.

My first visit in person to Wooden Shoe Books on South Street. It DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

Philly restaurant recommendation needed! Dear jawns.club locals and others, my wife is looking to take a visiting college friend out for lunch tomorrow in Philly. Looking for a relaxed sitting-and-talking vibe for someone who is gluten-free but not celiac.

Suggestions gratefully accepted […]

#mahjong lessons last week at PAX.

My favorite part of mahjong is the TAP of DISAPPOINTMENT.

Draw a tile, scrub your thumb across it to understand what it is, and only then look at it.

Then tap it on the table several times to indicate your fatalistic […]

So the deal with #sewing a hooded garment is that you make the hood - roughly, a conic section - then you make the body - a much bigger conic section - then you turn both inside out and nest them like stacking upside-down traffic cones, and THEN you stitch 5/8” […]

My daughter is at Temple Rome this semester, and is in Berlin this weekend. She bought a book of sandwich recipes and sent me
Pictures so I made a Vegemite sandwich today. IT WAS SO GOOD. Like everyone else who listened to Midnight Oil in the eighties, I was […]

Are there any folks on Jawns.club that have successfully bridged _both_ ways with Bridgy fed?

Ive got the fed -> bsky part working, but never the “bsky -> fed” part where I can follow a BlueSky user.

I finished #sewing the bottle-green cotton moleskin into a Landgate jacket, lined with bright green silk shantung. The brushed cotton is COM.FOR.TABLE!

I found dark bottle-green cotton moleskin at Mood, so I’m #sewing another Landgate jacket and lining the hood and cuffs with bright green silk shantung.

Lots of very old formalwear used dark green dye to achieve black, and a hundred years later if it still […]

“Browsing” is not the right word for trying to find the right fabric in NYC’s garment district, where the stores have a million square feet’s worth of stock crammed into a single storefront.

There’s a lot of etiquette that I’m just starting to learn.

Mostly […]

I did not know there were swatch cards for plants! These are the “RHS Colour Chart, sixth edition”, and the color swatches each have a little hole punched in the middle so you can hold a leaf or flower behind them, maybe?

We found these while touring the […]
