There’s a rabbit nest next to our blueberry bushes. Specifically, this species is the eastern cottontail.

The mother cottontail digs a shallow burrow and covers it with plants and her own fur. Twice a day, she will check on her babies and provide them with milk.

The eastern hognose snake (Heterodon platirhinos) is a harmless species native to the eastern US and Canada. When threatened, it will pretend to strike as if it is venomous. If that fails, it will pretend to die and release a foul musk.

This snake (known as the northern black racer) has been living in our mailbox for the past month. It gave our mail lady a fright, so I relocated it to our treehouse.

They’re nonvenomous, but they still bite, so I made sure to wear thick gloves while handling.

Ever wondered what fireflies look like up close? This is the common eastern firefly (Photinus pyralis), which is found across eastern North America. Soon enough, we'll be seeing a lot them at dusk.

The 12 Apostles in Victoria, Australia. Named after the impressive seaside limestone stacks, it's unknown if 12 stacks actually existed. Originally, there were nine, but now, there are only seven left standing.

I just did some research. Most likely it was caught off South Africa or eastern Africa. The other species of coelacanth, which lives in Indonesia, was not discovered until the 1990s, which is way after 1965.

This is me with my camera circa June 2013 taking photos of mudskippers in the mangroves of Cairns, QLD, Australia. Mudskippers (pictured on right) are crazy fish that have the ability to walk on land and gulp air to breathe.

Yesterday, I found a young snake in my shed. Known as the northern black racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor), it's nonvenomous and takes care of pests.

Left: Snake in my shed yesterday.
Right: A closeup picture I took of a different snake of the same species in a park.

If you're on a roadtrip between Chattanooga, TN and Atlanta, GA, the Tellus Science Museum is a really cool stop. It's just north of Cartersville, GA, right off I-75. There's even a truckstop next door, in case you're driving an 18 wheeler!

Science rules!!

Tulum is the third most-visited archeological site in Mexico, and that's for good reason. When you visit, it is an impressive sight to behold. The Mayans built this walled city on the shore of the Caribbean Sea between 1200 and 1450 AD.
