There’s a rabbit nest next to our blueberry bushes. Specifically, this species is the eastern cottontail.

The mother cottontail digs a shallow burrow and covers it with plants and her own fur. Twice a day, she will check on her babies and provide them with milk.

I've been working in the maritime industry for over 10 years, but everyone has to start somewhere. Back in 2014, I was a "green" deckhand who didn't know port from starboard. This is my origin story.

My Life as a Tugboat Deckhand
Every sailor has a sea story, and I have my own tales from the sea. One of my most memorable tales took place in the summer of 2014 when I was hired as a deckhand at a tugboat company. Back then, I…

The eastern hognose snake (Heterodon platirhinos) is a harmless species native to the eastern US and Canada. When threatened, it will pretend to strike as if it is venomous. If that fails, it will pretend to die and release a foul musk.

This snake (known as the northern black racer) has been living in our mailbox for the past month. It gave our mail lady a fright, so I relocated it to our treehouse.

They’re nonvenomous, but they still bite, so I made sure to wear thick gloves while handling.
