Today I am adding Structured Data for Broinowski's The Birds of Australia!

commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categor...

While our current focus is on South America and Africa, there is a decent amount of southern birds that are common to SA, AF and Australia, like the black-browed albatross.

Another 100 plates in this absolute jewel: Flora columbiae

The work combines completenes (seeds, leafs, diagrams) with rich colors and visual impact.

Below, Sabal (Thritinax) mauritiiformis, look at these details!

7/7 - carbonated swamp warbler

As Wikipedia puts it, the carbonated swamp warbler are one of the five 'mystery birds' in Audubons' work that are not identified with any extant species

6/7 - scarlet ibis

Though Audubon meant U.S. by "America" he did draw some birds that are not quite U.S. citizens — like these scarlet ibises, South America.

Seeing them at the Belem Zoobotanical Park was one of the memorable moments of my childhood:

3/7 - American flamingo

The original plates were life-sized (!) which led to Audubon representing big birds in weird positions.

2/7 - house wren

House wrens, called in Portuguese "garrincha", are the name sake of one of the best football players ever, Garrincha, "the angel with bent legs"

I've just added Structured Data to Wikimedia Commons to an album by Albert S Hitchcock using OpenRefine (thanks @sandraf.bsky.social + team 😀)

For details, docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Some manual curation is still in need at: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categor...

Now to some nice images!

The Biodiversity Heritage Library Arena!

This little app helps explore the BHL images on Wikimedia Commons, find files needing extra metadata, and help prioritize candidates for reuse on @wikipedia.bsky.social and beyond.
