Outside of academia I make and design happy things 🌱🌿🪴

My latest fashion for academic meetings 🤵🏻‍♀️. I need sth simple that still radiates unmatched alpha power, and shows I know what I’m talking about when I say things like “autoregressive correlation.” You won’t see me coming until I’m already right in front of you, somewhere below your usual eye level.

I had the privilege to visit Estonia to see @kaitlynmwerner.bsky.social and meet with @estwell.bsky.social group. I got to experience amazing hospitality here and learn about the country’s history. It’s humbling to get to see so much as a Vietnamese who’s been lucky to travel to so many places 🙏 .

I am traveling for another talk and lab visit this week. My favorite thing staying in hotels is playing Cartoon Network while I finish preparing my talk 🤓💻
This is also the first time I brought my portable screen, and love it! Although having it out while waiting at the airport got a few stares 😅

I know there are a lot of worse things in other parts of the world but what is happening in Vietnam breaks my heart. My family in the South is safe but Northern and Central regions are facing flooding and landslides.

The most vulnerable countries are disproportionately affected by climate crisis.

I am excited to welcome @koumurayama.bsky.social to @durhampsych.bsky.social this Friday.
Kou will give a seminar talk on how gaining knowledge can reinforce and sustain interest over time. We will also discuss our Matariki collaboration.

Responding to emails during the 2 minute rest between lifts AND also making sure I delete this line in my email is why I don’t have nice things.

In Jensen Huang (creator of nvidia)’s biography, he calls this “making the marginal costs of doing things to zero”. I read the book because I heard he is one of the people who sees no risk in “AI”. His p(doom) - probability that it might one day eliminate the human race - was zero.

This is where I go to get the link to share. I always test it with incognito mode to make sure but I am still nervous every time.

This is one of the problems that I feel so helpless about.
Large commercial publishers get very high profit margins (over 30%). Meanwhile, HE institutions, funders, or indiv academics pay for access and APC, and academics peer review for free.

Academia in one meme

I skipped a few chapters; wasn’t interested in Jensen’s rise to power per se, only in his view on what everyone calls “AI”. The last few chapters get at that: long story short, Jensen is an engineer and not into science fiction lol. Cherry on top is this paragraph about difference btw him and Musk.

Just found out it is going to be a cocktail event 🤵🏻‍♀️ and there will be not just academics. I asked a colleague if I need business cards. We both are not sure but I thought it’d save me some explaining what I do. Got this from Canva. And had my nails done! 💅 Now I just need to figure out what to wear…

Interesting how the color can change the “solitary” feel of a picture. The same shots of the house by the river but in a different light somehow feel more activating than the previous one.

I did a photoshoot of nature today to use for @thesolitudelab.bsky.social. Some photos look very close to the fall in New England, but the trees here don’t quite turn red and yellow as much.

A bit of news. I was nominated for the #Vietnam International Awards for ongoing work to build a research centre in Ho Chi Minh (more on that later).

I am not finalist but feel honored enough to attend the ceremony on Nov 8 in London alongside many innovative people that are working to give back.

I love seeing things like this when you can tell the original author of the scale was obviously annoyed about his scales being used in ways that he did not intend...and also by the emails.
And I love that Carver's department let him leave these notes on the website.

Gangster is exactly the word I would use to describe seagull. They stare you down even when you just walk past.

I was in Sussex to give a research talk. Thank you @rebekkakesberg.bsky.social @gilliansocial.bsky.social for organizing! It’s my first time in Brighton. Here is a photo of me just minutes before running away from the seagulls because they thought I have the goodies.
