Thoughts On Horror
@thoughtsonhorror.bsky.social
I watch many, many horror films and then have small thoughts on them. Other people may have different thoughts.
Also an Evertonian, so swings and roundabouts really.

Guts of a Virgin (1986): A film crew are attacked by a big bloke whilst staying at an abandoned house. Mostly soft core porn really with occasional bursts of violence. Does have a certain amount of style though and is pretty damn weird.

The Stuff (1985): An industrial saboteur is hired to find out how a popular new dessert is made. It actually comes out of the ground and is very dangerous. A mix of body horror and conspiracy thriller done in comedic fashion. Works quite well and has some good practical effects.

Deadly Manor (1990): A group of young people on the way to a lake pick up a hitchhiker and end up stranded at a mysterious old house. Then someone starts killing them. A dull slasher that feels like an Italian horror thanks to the dubbing. Has its moments but mostly forgettable.

Stranger (1991): A female taxi driver with a shady past is stalked by a customer who starts following her in a 4x4. Reminiscent of Duel but in an urban setting and with a dose of Japanese quirkiness. A really good film about loneliness whilst surrounded by people.

Demonia (1990): A group of archaeologists working in Sicily come across a haunted chapel. One woman in the group is drawn to it. Fulci disowned this but it’s not that bad. Has some of his usual bizarre deaths and makes sense for the most part. Decent little folk horror.

SS Experiment Love Camp (1976): Female prisoners are forced to pleasure soldiers whilst also being randomly experimented on. Basically soft core porn in very bad taste. Not as gross as some of its contemporaries since it’s fairly inept, and has one incredibly (unintentionally?) hilarious line in it.

Shin Godzilla (2016): A huge radioactive lizard beast emerges from the sea and smashes up Tokyo. The Japanese authorities try to find a way to defeat it before an international force uses nuclear weapons. Focuses on the administrative difficulties of a monster attack. Rather good it is too.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994): An insurance investigator is hired to find a missing horror author. This leads him to a supposedly fictional small town. Ambitious in scope and has some great practical effects. A fantastic adaptation of Lovecraft without being a direct adaptation.

Lover’s Lane (2000): 13 years after murdering a couple, a hook-handed killer escapes a mental institution and starts killing again. A straightforward slasher that has a slightly interesting ending, although it’s painful getting there given how cheap everything looks. Forgettable.

Hell High (1987): A teacher who caused two deaths as a child is harassed by some obnoxious students and goes crazy. An unusual slasher type film that almost has you rooting for the killer given the kids are so fucking unlikeable. Good film.

Scalpel (1977): A plastic surgeon transforms a victim of a brutal assault into a replica of his missing stepdaughter to get his hands on her inheritance. Goes tits up when his step daughter reappears. Great film that is tense from the beginning. The whole thing looks gorgeous.

The Initiation of Sarah (1978): Two step sisters join university, one is earmarked for a popular sorority, the other isn’t, but has magic powers. The real horror in this is how bitchy some of the girls are. Kind of like a less gruesome Carrie, but it’s a pretty good film.

Godzilla Minus One (2023): A kamikaze pilot who lost his nerve encounters Godzilla at the end of WWII. When nuclear tests the following year create a bigger monster, he helps fight it. Absolutely fantastic, with excellent effects and a moving human story. Great scenes of destruction.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976): A small town is plagued by a masked killer just after WWII. Police try and catch the culprit. Based on a true story and is decent true crime/early slasher material. Has some silly moments but mostly gripping, and the case is still unsolved.

April Fool’s Day (1986): A group of irritating college friends gather to stay at the remote island home of one of their peers. Amidst pulling pranks on each other they start getting killed. Would be less annoying if it didn’t have a smug rug pull of an ending. Pretty tame stuff.

Vacancy (2007): A bickering couple lost late at night stop at a deserted motel when their car breaks down. Unfortunately it’s a motel where guests are filmed being murdered. Well made and fairly tense but quite predictable in the end and not as good as other similar films.

Uncle Sam (1996): After being killed in friendly fire, a psychotic soldier is returned home. He wakes up and starts killing folk who aren’t American enough. Unusual for a slasher to be overtly political but this one certainly is. Some great cameos and weird kills.

In the Grip of Terror (2025): An anthology of stories all set in the same strange hospital, told by a weird doctor in the basement. A fun tribute to Amicus productions of the past, that makes great use of a creepy location. Also has a great score.

Berberian Sound Studio (2012): A British chap is hired to work on the sound for an Italian horror film. Out of his comfort zone, he starts to unravel. More atmosphere and brilliant sound design than there is plot, as it builds to a nightmarish third act. Jones is great though.
October 13, 2025 at 11:26 AM
The Neon Demon (2016): An aspiring young model is new in town and everybody she meets either desires her or is jealous of her beauty. A slow burn that builds up to an unbelievably horrifying finale. Looks beautiful and Fanning is exceptional. Strange but rewards patience.
October 13, 2025 at 9:07 AM
Cat People (1982): A woman moves in with her brother who she hasn’t seen for many years. He keeps turning into a leopard and attacking folks though. An excellent remake that doesn’t stick too closely to the original other than a couple of scenes and themes. Very violent at times.
October 11, 2025 at 12:49 PM
Mortuary (1982): People are being murdered by a mysterious cloaked figure who seems to have a connection to the local mortuary. Absolutely batshit insane. Takes loads of left turns, some of which are never explained. The killer is particularly crazy too.
October 11, 2025 at 9:26 AM
Taste of Fear (1961): A young lady is summoned to the house of her father and step mother. The father is away but the girl, who is wheelchair bound, keeps seeing him around. Atmospheric and suspenseful, with a very twisty plot. Has an absolute banger of an ending. Great stuff.
October 9, 2025 at 12:47 PM
Black Christmas (2019): Girls at a sorority house are attacked and killed by masked killers who are obviously linked to a misogynistic fraternity house. Tries something new at least but pulls too many punches and is predictable from the beginning. Didn’t need to be a remake.
October 9, 2025 at 10:44 AM
Bruiser (2000): A meek man in a bad marriage working for an awful boss gets more confidence when he wears a mask. And also he kills people who have wronged him. Some good ideas and an interesting theme but derailed by one very over the top performance and a cheap feel overall.
