Homemade costume for Jevil from Deltarune for my 11 year old. His friends also went as video game characters & we saw some amazing Hollow Knight costumes.

Writing retreat in the mountains of West VA is going well. I’m going to finish this fucking book & yes, until further notice, my preface poaches its title from this abandoned truck I saw in the Bakken: “Piece of Shit, Left for Dead.” I also scared two coyotes by accident on a hike in Canaan Valley.

The midterms from my analog upper level seminar; they’re brilliant & full of theories on the function of art
in the present while undertaking micro-scale formal analysis. An 80 minute class & no one left early. Print is a rent strike & a pedagogical asset for this moment. @mattseybold.bsky.social ✊🏼

Because they used to rip things off my office door or slide “Identity Europa”’materials underneath, I got a dry erase board so that it is very easy to clean up. I guess this is “viewpoint diversity”?

Lest we forget this one too.

We went into the hills and the caves and found large wolf spiders and something close to silence.

Getting back to my modernist roots and tying up this essay for the forthcoming Cambridge Handbook to Caribbean Modernism. I always wanted to write about Andrew Salkey's Escape to An Autumn Pavement. I hope I didn't fuck it up.

I’m enjoying this book & learning a lot about my disdain for optimism & “hopeful” discourse around climate, but not engaging with Berlant’s cruel optimism, while talking about optimism as a cruel philosophy via Voltaire, is a missed chance for some dialectical twists that could have been 🔥.

Staring at Giacometti at the Louisiana Museum in Denmark as a balm against the AI takeover of my university’s curriculum.

Welp…AI integration is now mandated across all majors at OSU so that students will be, in the words of our new Provost, “bilingual.” oaa.osu.edu/ai-fluency

I walked up about 2000 Sherpa steps to get to the summit of Reinebringen and I fully expect my legs to fail me tomorrow.

In Oslo doing Oslo things. And now leaving for Svolvær.

This lovely book by @nathankhensley.bsky.social arrived yesterday. It’s been an absolute pleasure, & a gift, to have had this friendship for over 23 years & to see all the thinking, commitment, & labor bloom into amazing work after amazing work. I can’t wait to read & be inspired by this one.

When I’m not writing books, teaching, or complaining, I guess I still play punk & hardcore shows. From Blind Rage records fest this weekend with Frail, Usurp Synapse, Sect, & others
May 12, 2025 at 6:28 PM
My noisy punk/hardcore band Prevail will be playing this stacked show next week and it’s our first show, umm, this century? Anyway, I love Frail and Sect and you should too and I have new pedals and pickups. It will be loud. Come hang if you’re in the area.

All the hail from the storm an hour ago evidently landed outside of our door.

As a child of the 1980s, I probably watched Real Genius 100+ times. “Oh Kent, that is so unfair. And we were gonna make you king of the winter carnival.”

Kohei Saito on the possibility that the success of his book Slow Down indicates a leftist revival in Japan. This was a fabulous talk.

We got a kitten. Class prep is going poorly.

It’s too early for this shit, Bluesky…

We are getting this kitten tomorrow and my 10 year old son is thrilled (remains to be seen how the 3 year old cat reacts).

My alma mater is dismantling TTU and I take this as Dawn Staley telling me “now would be a good time to order take out and go buy more beer. Ain’t nothing happening here.”

I submitted my opponent testimony to Ohio SB 1, a right wing takeover of higher ed. Today my colleagues will be testifying against it in person. All testimony will be public soon but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to sling Orwell back at them near the end of my take on “intellectual diversity”:

We finally learned to play Wingspan and loved it. The lovely folks at Tabletop Game Cafe took time to walk us through the basics. The world is hell, but boardgames are good.

Nearly a decade before I got the job at OSU my punk/hXc band played this legendary MTM fest& I only just realized from this flyer a friend posted on Insta that the $ went to the amazing Kaleidoscope Queer Youth center, which I’ve been donating to for years. Also forgot Dillinger 4 and Braid played.
