Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

This such an insane take I have to assume it's engagement bait? I'm so confused.

Anyway everyone can like both Star Wars and Star Trek, this is a dumb false dichotomy.
You ever think about just how handily Star Trek has won the Star Wars/Star Trek war? Turns out making a lot of good content is really hard!

Tried to share my excitement with my wife over how cool it is how Egyptian hieroglyphics led to nearly all modern forms of writing except East Asian scripts, and the evolution of letters from Egyptian glyphs to Proto-sinaitic to Phoenician to Greek to Latin.

Inexplicable lack of intense interest.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

Remind me what did we fight a revolutionary war over?
If the president can just raise taxes and spend money without Congressional approval, the constitution is null and void.
BREAKING: Deputy White House Chief of Staff James Blair said the administration is eyeing ways to give millions of Americans $2,000 dividend checks from tariff revenue without congressional approval, per Bloomberg.

One of the most vile things any president has ever said on camera.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

As usual the language Tycho uses is a bit pretentiously incomprehensible but his basic position here seems to be it's OK for a game to use generative AI if he otherwise really likes the game, and that seems like an odious and hypocritical position. www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/20...

NYT is celebrating elite freedom from accountability. Actively celebrating it. You wouldn't put this in a satire, it's too ham-handed!

I like how with the whole “sitting on Epstein files” and “actually the rape victim was the instigator and Matt Gaetz was the real victim” stuff most papers would take a little break. But not the New York Times. They want to repeatedly hammer home just how fucking awful they are.

Nuzzi, like TCW, exists as a kind of simulacrum of the midcentury public intellectual. Not even ripping off the writers of that era, but imitating a sort of half-remembered, half-invented idea of what those writers were sort of like and what their general vibe was.
