In the smallish Midwestern city where I worked starting in the '80s, you could gag on the sulfurous smell of the paper mill. But those were the good old days, according to those who don't remember them.

As one who graduated in high-unemployment, high-inflation 1979 (both got worse), and remembers mid-‘80s mortgage rates of 13%+, that kind of bullshit (by people too young to remember and too lazy to research) drives me nuts. Not to mention the mainstream homophobia, sexism, etc. Bah humbug.

I read a lot of history, including some by academics. I like the style some ebooks use of putting the notes in the back, but also as linked pop-ups. I like to check many of the cites, and it makes it a lot easier to do than clicking to the back all the time.

Every once in awhile I'll still get junk mail for my first wife, who died >23 years ago. I long ago remarried, and we've moved multiple times, so it comes to addresses she never lived at. I still wince.
