Anacronisms and inaccuracies aside, this is another Moore work with lots of risqué humor, sex, swearing, backstabbing, plotting, insanity, drama, death, and comedy.

Outside of repeated mentions of drug use, depression, and ECT in the first chapter, there wasn't a whole lot about Carrie besides her interactions with mostly those 3 people.

I guess after doing a play and a book about her life, there wasn't much else to write about.

Just had a friend introduce me to Overly Sarcastic Productions after telling them about this book. Enjoy the (mostly accurate) summary!

Probably my biggest gripe with the book is the long monologues the author expy tends to delve into.

Also, just a heads up: this is a book written in the 50's and published early 60's, so expect a lot of sexism, racism, and values dissonance.

I am surprised for a book written in the 50's how little has changed. Politics is all bureaucracy and power. Religion is about money and influence, with mega churches encouraging gambling and drinking alcohol in the building. And those trying to teach love and understanding are hated for it

An art fair, comic-con or trade show would be a good way to get your art out in the world and get some in person feedback. If you are a quick enough creator, you can even make commissions for people.

Romance that is just south of erotica. The whole book is about a gay resort in the woods. There is plenty of spice if that is your thing.

Every gay stereotype you can think of is in this book (at least all those I'M aware of, but I'm not exactly the target audience so i could be wrong)

Unrelated, but something I've come to realize as I've gotten back into reading, I enjoy anthologies a lot more than I used to.

There is something about seeing the different interpretations and writing styles that makes the old themes fresh and different.

If you try to read this as a historical fantasy/romance, you will have a bad time.

Read it as a comedic parody, and you may be able to finish it.

3) The characters and dialogues are just... bad. They don't come off as real people, just flat and one-dimensional. Everybody just has one trait that is their entire personality.

Oh yeah, and several of the characters have superpowers. The villain even has Magneto's motivation and history!

...There is no way a female teenage slave in the 1800's would talk back to her owners and their kin and get nothing more than a mild talking to, to say nothing of her being in a relationship with her owner's white son.

2) The main character is a woman born into slavery who has modern views and opinions about it, AND openly talks and acts in a way that would have gotten her routinely beaten or even killed back then...

There were three things that made this troubling for me:

1) let's just get this out of the way. The N word (hard 'r') is used at least once a page, and there are around 250 pages. I read less of that word in Huckleberry Finn and The Help combined!

The novel itself is fairly straightforward and easy to get through. I would have liked to see some plot twists or better fleshed out characters outside of the two main heroines. There are other novels in the series, so perhaps there will be some of that in future books.

With there being such a variety of stories and art styles, I'm sure there is something in here that everyone can enjoy. Just don't expect it all to suit your tastes.
