First Labour poll lead over the SNP in nearly a decade, apparently. A long way to go yet, but promising signs.

Tory sources have given the first hint that Britain could go to the polls on 31 October 2024

31st October a possible date for the next election says The Times. Someone in the other place made the point Halloween's an awkward night to go out to vote if you're a parent wanting to take your child trick or treating. And in terms of getting out the vote, few will answer the door once it's dark.

If the YouGov survey is accurate, the Conservatives can't run a presidential campaign with Sunak at the centre of it at the next election - and anyone who's seen how brittle he is in interviews already knew it was a bad idea anyway. You wonder what other options are open to them.

The two points about enthusiasm that it's always worth remembering:
1. My passionate, wearing the t-shirt, got a tattoo of the leader's face on my arm, vote counts exactly the same as your "ugh, I guess they'll do" vote
2. Their "I don't care, just stop THAT GUY" vote probably outnumbers us both
Also this. I somewhat sympathise with the very online left complaining Starmer doesn't enthuse enough, but we live in a small-c conservative country. You can get people who already want to vote for you excited, but it runs the risk of others whose votes you need running away.

There was plenty of moaning on the left before 1997 that Blair's Labour wasn't exciting enough people and that they wouldn't come out to vote.

Big takeaways from last night’s results, in order:
1. No GE until January 2025
2. The Tories will look at the Reform/UKIP results and go further right.
3. That will make the next 15 months relentlessly and deeply unpleasant.
4. Labour must stay disciplined.
5. Brilliant, brilliant Labour results.

Well, this is a cheery thread!
After the election there's going to be a fiscal hole to fill. How big though?

A *very* fag-packet calculation suggests whoever wins needs £30-40bn just to keep the show on the road - unless something turns up Some thinking aloud...🧵

The combined Lib Dem/Lab vote share in mid-Beds should terrify Tories. There aren't that many seats where it's so unclear which party is in 2nd place. That splitting the opposition vote wasn't enough to save a safe home counties seat points to electoral carnage for govt.
