In a great collaboration with @hummerlab.bsky.social and the Kräusslich lab: HIV capsid doesn't break at the NPC; instead, it cracks open the NPC itself! Details in Cell: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S... @mpibp.bsky.social @uniheidelberg.bsky.social A thread below:

Talking on the phone with a friend living in Louisiana.
Her: "It might snow next Tuesday"
Me: "Yeah. It's gonna be -2 and -9 on Monday and Tuesday
Her: "How cold is that in Fahrenheit?"
Me: "That is Fahrenheit"

Cellular RNA interacts with MAVS to promote antiviral signaling
Antiviral signaling downstream of RIG-I–like receptors (RLRs) proceeds through a multi-protein complex organized around the adaptor protein mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS). Protein co...

I’m proud to join more than 30 colleagues today in sharing our analysis of potential risks from “mirror life”. We summarize our findings in a @science.org article, and in greater detail in a 300pg technical report:

Receptor switching is one of the key steps in adaptation of animal influenza viruses to humans. Studies shows that is requires only a single mutation to do that. The widespread circulation of AI in cattle is playing with fire. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A single mutation in bovine influenza H5N1 hemagglutinin switches specificity to human receptors
In 2024, several human infections with highly pathogenic clade 2.3.4.4b bovine influenza H5N1 viruses in the United States raised concerns about their capability for bovine-to-human or even human-to-h...

It's kinda a slap in the face when we're told that some people might be uncomfortable if we're bringing our same sex spouse to a departmental holiday party. DEI is merely just a slogan, I guess

Getting around to this paper in Journal of Virology and its a banger. Prenatal exposure to RSV season in the *third trimester* significantly reduces a child's risk of RSV-LRI in first year. And it seems to be a fetal IFN response, not maternal antibodies.
