The opening page to the very first edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica. Note that this transcription has altered any archaic spellings of words to the modern ones. The title reads: "Encyclopaedia Britannica; or, a Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, compiled upon a new plan. In which The different Sciences and Arts are digested into distinct Treatises or Systems; and The various Technical Terms, etc. are explained as they occur in the order of the Alphabet." Note that in the above title, a signature belonging to James Fullerton is at the top of the page, the individual words separated by the "or, a" text. Below this title is a notice surrounded by two thin bars above and below it, reading "Illustrated with one hundred and sixty copperplates." Below that notice is a simple credit with a thin black bar beneath it, reading "By a Society of Gentlemen in Scotland." Below that credit are two additional notices, also separated by black bars, reading "In three volumes" and "Vol. 1." Below the abbreviated volume notice are two thin black bars put close together, dividing it from one last notice about the publishing information, reading "Edinburgh. Printed for A. Bell and C. Macfarquhar; and fold by Colin Macfarquhar, at his Printing-office, Nicolson-Street." Lastly, there is a short thin black bar at the bottom; below that are the Roman numerals "MDCCLXXI," indicating a publishing year of 1771.
