Kama‘āina lucky to still be in Hawai‘i. 📍O'ahu

People in Hawai‘i love to complain about govt because it's an easy foil for what troubles them. It's a perpetual grievance they can wield. But ask them to show up and actually vote to make change (however slow it may come)?

Nope. Just over 50% turn out, the worst by far.
Just about complete with state turnout rates, with still just a few more states left to post final numbers. Here's a 2020 (Blue) to 2024 (Orange) turnout rates with green arrows identifying turnout rate increases

Truly amazing that any time the democrats have to bite the bullet and do something that ruins countless lives, there's always *just* enough votes to get it done, but if there is a vote on something that would actually improve people's lives, they are always one vote short. Crazy how that happens.

John McCain, while looking at death in his future, voted to protect the ACA. There isn't a vessel on this planet that contain the absolute fury we should all be feeling for this cast of absolute fucking losers.

Justice Barrett worried that the tariff refund process would be a mess if the plaintiffs win this case. Maybe you should’ve stayed the administration’s actions upfront. It’s only a mess because SCOTUS allowed it.

Every day I log on and just see endless videos of ICE agents breaking state, federal, and international laws.

The sad but obvious counterpoint to knowing our "rights" and confidently proclaiming so is the clear video evidence that the President, the DOJ, the DHS, and ICE/CBP/FBI/National Guard seemingly do not care about our "rights" and will routinely, and gladly, violate them without consequence.

Again, not to put too fine a point on it, but Hawai‘i's governor is an actual doctor and yet, he's said pretty much nothing about whether his own constituents will suffer from the CDC's new guidance.

Maybe too busy palling around with these people. 🤷
September 3, 2025 at 11:43 PM
I dunno, seems like having an actual doctor as governor would make this pretty straightforward but, as per usual, Hawai‘i Governor Josh Green is MIA. He should have been the first governor to make such an announcement but until it's a crisis we likely won't hear a peep.
New Mexico is overriding the federal government on the topic of COVID19 vaccines to ensure their residents can access them.

States hold a tremendous amount of public health power. They should use it.

So painful to read Federalist 76, which is about the president's appointment power, in 2025.

Hamilton's like, no president would be so degenerate as to appoint only those "personally allied to him," esp since Senate confirmation would 'silently operate' as an "excellent check" on such attempts

A week and a half ago, no one would have said America bombing Iran was anything but crazy. But Bibi Netanyahu successfully got Donald Trump to bring the United States into a war against Iran with almost no debate in America, something Bibi has wanted for decades. Just unbelievable.

As an institution, the New York Times has failed. This excellent thread by Michael Hobbes takes apart today's NYT editorial urging democracy defenders to mind their manners as they oppose Trump.
NYT seems to hold out hope that lavender oatmilk lattes will be served in the journalist detention camps.
Why on earth would a protest movement against the worst president in US history begin by acknowledging that he's not so bad

I have an even hotter take, anti Blackness isn't rooted in logic. None of our explainers for their aversion to DEI take in the very real issue of how much pleasure they get out of hate. The most successful bigots still hate equality laws because if they don't have anyone to hate they're unhappy
🧵I disagree with Jamelle Bouie very rarely, but I do here:

Ppl w/ unearned confidence believe their confidence is earned. Mediocre, mid, & otherwise unimpressive white people who oppose DEI actually *believe* themselves to have been cheated.

It's the root of antisemitism, in fact! A thread! Fun!
these people hate DEI because they would be unemployable in any system where they couldn’t rely on favoritism and nepotism

the fundamental problem with these people (not jonathan) is that they don’t seem to believe in anything. if you’re willing to sacrifice one of the foundational rights of constitutional government on the altar of “buh this might not be popular” then what won’t you sacrifice?
If you think you can't make a political issue out of "people shouldn't be grabbed off the street and put in a foreign gulag forever," maybe consider getting out of politics/punditry. And these aren't technical slogans: they appear in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution (twice).
